CU men back in action Saturday at UCO

LAWTON – After having three games postponed to later in the season due to health and safety protocols, the Aggie men are back in action this weekend as they visit Central Oklahoma on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Cameron men's basketball opened the season with a spilt weekend against a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schools over two weeks ago (Nov. 12 and 13). After having about two weeks off, the Aggies are back to competition when they visit the Bronchos.

STARTING 5
1. Cameron opened the new season with a split weekend against a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foes, but health and safety protocols forced the program to postpone three games to later in the season (at Rogers State Dec. 29, at SWOSU Jan. 31, and Newman Feb. 8).
2. In the Aggies' opening two games, transfer Colt Savage averaged 15.5 points and shot 59 percent from the floor while making 7-11 from three-point range.
3. Connor Slater played some tough minutes to open his third year at Cameron, averaging 12 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks while shooting 58 percent from the floor during the Aggies' opening weekend.
4. Central Oklahoma is coming off an 86-65 loss to Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas on Nov. 20; Camryn Givens led the team with 17 points on 6-10 shooting while Callen Haydon added 10 points.
5. Senior forward and Oklahoma City native Isaiah Wade is averaging a double-double for UCO, scoring 17.8 points and grabbing 10.3 points per game while shooting 64 percent from the floor; he has two double-doubles this season.

ABOUT THE AGGIES
Cameron began their new season with something they didn't accomplish until the last game of the season last spring, earning a win at home. That win came against CSU-Pueblo on a night where the Aggies top two scorers from last season were cold from the field. They then followed that up by facing a long and talented UCCS squad, falling behind early and losing 84-66, unable to complete a second half comeback led by a spark off the bench by newcomer Deondre Earley

The Aggie offense was up and down during their first weekend, shooting 37 percent from the field and 34 percent from long range, making just 5.5 shots from three per outing. They did, however, do a good job of getting to the foul line, averaging 18.5 made free throws and knocking them down at an 80 percent clip. The Black and Gold also did a good job of ball control, turning it over on average 11 times while forcing their opponents into 16.5 turnovers per contest. They also averaged 4.5 blocks per game, second best in the LSC to this point in the year.

Savage is one of three players to average over 10 points per game during the opening weekend. Slater averaged 12 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks while shooting around 58 percent from the field. Brock Schreiner, despite a slow start shooting the ball, averaged 10 points and 3.5 assists, edging out Marques Warrior Jr., who averaged eight points, four rebounds, three assists, and a steal against the two RMAC schools. Freshman Joshua Fanuiel had an impressive debut, going for 16 points in the win over CSU-pueblo while also averaging five rebounds over the two-day span.

SCOUTING THE BRONCHOS
Central Oklahoma enters their matchup against the Aggies with a 3-1 record, coming off their loss at MSU last week. They are out-scoring their opponents by an average of 12 points, scoring 83.8 on offense while shooting over 48 percent from the field. They excel from long range, making 9.3 triples per outing at a 37.4 percent clip. UCO has also controlled the glass in their first four games, out-rebounding their opponents by an average of nine boards.

Wade leads the way in both scoring and rebounding while Jaden Wells is averaging 12.8 points and has made a team-high 12 three-pointers and Cam Givens is averaging 12.3 points and 5.3 boards for the Chos. Senior guard Callen Haydon leads the team in assists (23) while Wells has a team-best nine steals.

LAST TIME AGAINST UCO
In a rivalry that spans decades, the last time this two teams met up it was a classic showdown in the Aggie Gym. On Nov. 30, 2019, the Bronchos got off to a quick start on CU's home floor, out-scoring them 46-30 in the first half. Cameron rallied in the second, taking a six-point lead on a Schreiner three with 2:41 to play. The home team held off the late surge by UCO to win 73-71. The Black and Gold shot 43 percent from the floor and went 10-21 from long range and only turned the ball over three times in the win. Schreiner had 13 points and five helpers, while his new teammate, Savage scored 11 off the bench for UCO.

WHO HAS NEXT
Cameron faces their first two Lone Star Conference opponents next week, but neither game will count towards the Aggies' league record and the LSC standings. First up is a meeting with Red River rival Midwestern State on Tuesday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. and then CU hosts Western New Mexico on Thursday, Dec. 2, at 7:30 p.m. after the women's game against WNMU. Cameron will then be on the road for four games to close out the calendar year.
