LAWTON – The Cameron women's basketball team forced 35 turnovers and used a big third quarter to take care of Western New Mexico in Thursday's non-conference meeting.
Looking to snap a four-game losing skid, the Aggies hosted the Mustangs, who entered the game, which does not count toward league standings, with a 3-0 record. Despite a slow start, CU capitalized on WNMU mistakes and a great start to the second half to win 85-60.
Cameron shot just 38 percent from the field and was 8-33 from long distance in the win but did hit on 19 of their 21 free throw attempts and scored 30 points off of Mustang turnovers. Of the 35 turnovers by the Mustangs, 16 came on Aggie steals.
Maighan Hedge continued her hot-start to the season, scoring a game-high 21 points on 14 shots while also assisting on six made buckets.
Karley Miller made four three-pointers off the bench for 12 points and
Katie King added 10. All 13 of CU's suited-out players scored in the win.
Kassie Boorer,
Logan Collyer, and
Whitney Outon each had a team-best five rebounds while
Stephanie Peterson blocked two shots and had four steals with King adding four steals as well.
It was a slow start for Cameron, who shot under 30 percent in the first 20 minutes of play. They led 16-11 after one quarter and then led by 11 after a three by Miller in the final seconds of the second quarter.
The offense exploded for 34 points in the third quarter, shooting 59 percent from the floor and going 12-13 from the foul line. The led by 26 at the end of the period and ended up winning by just one less point, 85-60.
Western New Mexico shot 40 percent from the field, was 4-9 from three, and 12-17 from the charity stripe. Cassandra Vickery led the way with 12 points, while Destiney Johnson had eight points and 11 rebounds.
Cameron is now 5-4 on the season and, after a week off, will continue their stretch of non-conference games against league opponents on Dec. 14 when they visit Eastern New Mexico. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. (CT).
