Aggies split doubleheader with Buffs to open season

CANYON, Texas - The Cameron Aggie baseball team split an opening day doubleheader with the No. 12 ranked West Texas A&M Buffs behind an offensive outburst in game one.

The Cameron Aggies, after a few weeks of delays, finally got their season started on Sunday, Feb. 21st against West Texas A&M. Michael Womack got the ball on opening day and ran into trouble in the first inning. Womack's day was over before three outs were recorded. Despite his two strikeouts, he struggled with control, walking four Buff batters and seeing 3 runs come around to score, two being charged to the hurler. The Lawton, Okla. native faced eight batters in 0.2 innings of work. Three Buff runs scored in the first frame on just one hit.

Tyler Garcia got the ball next, and was effective, working out of the first frame jam, before cruising in the second and third innings. Garcia got into some trouble in the fourth as the Buffs struck for three more runs. Garica's day was over after 5.1 innings of work. Put into the long-relief situation, he only allowed three runs across six hits, and struck out a pair of batters on his way to earning the win out of the CU bullpen.

The Aggie offense came alive in their half of the fourth when the team exploded for a 10-run inning headlined by a two-out, three-run double produced by Ryan Carter. Carter finished game one 2-for-3 with 5 RBIs, a home run, and a run scored.

The Aggie offense turned in three homers, to go along with Carter's, Erik Ohman, and Jayce Clem also belted balls over the outfield wall. The CU offense poured in 14-runs to get the season started off right in a 14-12 upset win over West Texas A&M in game one.

In game two, Kyle Williams turned to Tyler Cornett who saw his start trend similarly to Womack's. Cornet was able to withstand the Buffs offense for 2.2-innings before being replaced in favor of Evan Nichols. Cornett allowed four runs across six hits, issued four free passes, but did punch out five batters.

The Aggies answered a 3-run Buffs first inning, with a run of their own in the second. Kalen Haynes, who tossed an inning of 3-run ball in game one on the bump, made an impact at the dish in game two. In the second inning, Hayes slapped a double down the right-field line to plate Carter and CU pulled within two runs for a moment. The Buffs offense made it a three-run game again in the next half-inning after scoring on a bases-loaded walk.

WT's offense scored 21 runs in this game in large part due to their 16-run fourth inning. CU tossed four pitchers in this contest and none of them left the game without surrendering at least one run.

CU's offense only scratched across two runs in the second contest, their last coming on a Jayce Clem fielding choice which brought around Beau Williams

The two teams will play the rubber match on Monday, with a 1 p.m. first pitch in Canyon, Texas.
