LAWTON – The Cameron men's basketball team is back at home in the Aggie Gym for the first time in over two weeks as they host UT Tyler for a pair of Lone Star Conference crossover games on Sunday and Monday.
STARTING 5:
1. The Cameron men have had a rough go of it this year, going 1-10 to start the season with all but five of those losses coming by 10 points or less and four were decided by five points or less.
2.
Brock Schreiner has continued to show his improvement this season, scoring 19 points with four made triples against one of the top defensives in the Lone Star Conference in the series finale last week; the junior guard has reached double-figures seven times this season and hit the 20 point mark in four of those.
3. Freshman
Kino Thompson broke out for a career-best 19 points while going 6-8 from the field and 3-5 from three in the second game of the Kingsville series; he is the eighth person to reach double-digits in scoring in a game for CU this season.
4. UT Tyler, 2-9 on the season, has also suffered a handful of close losses (four within five points or less), including a pair of losses to Texas A&M-Commerce on Jan. 22-23, their last games played.
5. Despite being 6-5 and listed as a guard, UTT's Emanuel Gant is second in the Lone Star Conference in rebounding with 8.9 boards per game; the senior also averages 10.5 points, 2.9 assists, and 2.1 steals for the Patriots.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Aggies had a tough go of it last weekend against then No. 22 Texas A&M-Kingsville. In the first game of the series, the Black and Gold fell behind early 36-15 and never recovered, shooting just 21.1 percent from the field and going 5-19 from three in the 78-48 defeat. Cameron hung around in the first half of game two, trailing by just three at the halftime break. However, after going 6-11 from three in the first 20 minutes, CU was 2-12 in the second half of the 77-63 loss.
ABOUT THE AGGIES:
After losing their fourth straight game last weekend, the Aggie men are on one of the worst starts in recent program history at 1-10. However, only five of those losses have been by more than 10 points, as CU has not gone down without a fight all season. Cameron is averaging 73.5 points per game, put the problem has been stopping their opponents, as they are last in the league in scoring defense, giving up 86.3 points per outing while allowing teams to shoot almost 49 percent from the field. They have been able to control their turnovers (15.6) and rack up assists (13.1), but they have not been forcing many giveaways wither, averaging just 6.5 steals on the defensive end. Schreiner (18.5) and Scott (10.1) are the only Aggies scoring in double-figures, while
Marques Warrior Jr. averages 8.9 to go along with a team-high 2.5 assists per game.
SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS:
Like the Aggies, the UT Tyler men have had a rough start to the 2020-21 campaign, going 2-9 overall and 1-9 in league play. Their two wins on the season came against Dallas Christian back in December and then Midwestern State on Jan. 16. The Patriots are averaging 75.5 points and shooting well over 44 percent from the field on the offensive side of the ball. They also make 16.2 foul shots per outing at a 74.2 percent clip. Defensively, UTT gives up 79.2 points per game and a 47 percent shooting percentage to their opposition. Four Tyler players are scoring over 10 points per contest, including senior guard Micah Fuller, who leads the team with a 14.8 scoring average to go along with 4.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. Da'Zhon Wyche is averaging 12.1 (ppg), 3.3 (rpg), and 3.1 (apg) for the Pats, while Solomon Thomas averages 11.7 points in 23.1 minutes per outing.
AGAINST UTT:
Cameron and UT Tyler have only met twice in the programs' history and both of those meetings came last season. In the first, the Aggies dominated the first half, 43-23, and cruised to a 71-52 win behind 20 points from Schreiner. The Aggies shot 45 percent for the night with 10 triples as a team, with Scott adding 12 points and
Connor Slater chipping in 10 with eight rebounds. In the second meeting, it was Tyler who had a 40-point first half as they led 44-36 at the break. Cameron was solid in every category except for turnovers as they had 16 in the 78-74 loss. Fuller had 20 points on 6-9 shooting for the Patriots, while Scott led CU with a 20 points, 12 rebound double-double.
WHO HAS NEXT:
Cameron is back on the road next weekend, Feb. 12-13, when they visit St. Mary's for two more non-divisional Lone Star Conference battles. Game one in San Antonio is set for Friday at 7:30 p.m. and game two will be played on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
