ARLINGTON, Texas – The Cameron women's and men's tennis teams opened their spring with a pair of matches at Division I UT Arlington on Saturday with the women falling 7-0 and the men losing 6-1.
In the women's match, Cameron fell behind early, dropping all three doubles matches.
Melany Opolz and
Karolina Glowinska put up a fight at No. 1, falling 4-2 to UTA's top pair, while
Pilar Jaurena and
Julianne Garcia lost 6-0 at No. 2 and
Lea Manga and
Lia Woods fell 6-1 playing at No. 3.
Glowinksa, a junior from Poland, held her own at No. 1, falling 7-6, 6-3, while the freshman Woods notched a few wins in both of her sets at No. 6 before losing 6-2, 6-3. Garcia at No. 2 and Opolz at No. 4 both lost 6-1, 6-1, while Manga lost 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 and Jaurena fell 6-0, 6-2 in the five spot.
Cameron's men were able to get one point against the higher division opponent, as
Bruno Vietri won 6-3, 7-6 on court one in singles play. At No. 2,
Oscar del Granado fell 6-2, 6-2, and at No. 3
Maycon Dias lost 6-1, 6-4. On court four, freshman
Joao Duleba lost 7-5, 6-2 while
Alvaro Chavez fell 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 and
Carlos Vidal fell 6-3, 6-4 on court six.
The Aggies entered singles play already down 1-0 as all three doubles pairs fell to their Maverick counterparts. Vietri and del Granado fell 6-3 on court one, Chavez and Duleba lost 6-1 on No. 2, and Dias and Vidal lost 6-3 in the third spot.
Next up for both teams is their first home matches, which they will play on Tuesday, Feb. 16, against Cowley County CC. Both matches are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex.
