Five homers and 16 runs not enough against Dustdevils

LAWTON – Five home runs and 16 runs scored were not enough to keep up with the hot-hitting Texas A&M International Dustdevils as they swept a doubleheader against Aggie softball on Sunday.

Last weekend, the Cameron softball split their first four Lone Star Conference games, and after dropping a pair to No. 18 Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday, they would need to sweep International to get back to .500 in league play.

The Dustdevils from Laredo had other plans as they swept both games of the Sunday slugfest at McMahon Field with 12 runs in game one and 14 runs in the second.

In game one, Cameron head coach Kayla Adams turned to freshman Jocelyn Bright to start the game in the circle. The Burkburnett, Texas product worked around hits in the first and second innings to keep the game scoreless but ran into trouble in the third.

Texas A&M International got the scoring started with a Morgan Chavarria two-run home in the top of the third. A few batters and two outs later, Briana Arredondo gave her team a 5-0 advantage with a three-run shot, that ended Bright's day in the circle.

The Aggies got two of those runs back in the bottom of the frame, as Khmari Edwards led off the inning with a single, which was followed by a Callie Christensen two-run home to right centerfield.

International answered with two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth, giving them a 9-2 advantage over the Aggies.

Cameron's big inning came in the bottom of the fifth, as Edwards and Christensen went back-to-back with solo homers to leadoff the frame, cutting the lead to five. After two straight singles by Breley Webb and Madyson Marvulli, Kylie French delivered a RBI single up the middle to score the third run of the frame.

Later in the frame, Marvulli scored as Janessa Larman reached via an error with the bases loaded and then French and Brenna Busby scored on a single by Edwards to get CU to within one. However, an odd play, that resulted in Edwards being called for leaving the base ended the inning and CU's momentum.

The Dustdevils added three insurance runs, one in the sixth and two more in the seventh, to secure the 12-8 win in game one.

Edwards recorded three hits, driving in three runs, and scoring two of her own. Christensen added a pair of hits on the two homers and drove in three as well. Both Marvulli and French added a pair of hits, of which Cameron totaled 11 in the game.

The CU staff of Bright, Webb, and Bethany Hines combined for nine strikeouts, but none of the three were able to keep the Dustdevils off the scoreboard when they were in the circle.

Cameron looked to be rebounding from the loss to start game two, as they scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Busby led off the frame with a homer down the leftfield line. Edwards delivered a RBI single that brought home Mikayla Richmond, who stole two bases after reaching on an infield single. Back-to-back RBI singles by French and Kacie Gilreath capped things off in an inning in which the Aggies batted around.

The Dustdevils doubled up CU's big inning with an eight-run frame in the top of the second, their second of the weekend. With Hines in the circle, TAMUI saw eight runners cross the plate on six hits and two errors in the frame.

Richmond scored one of three runs in the bottom of the second, coming home from second on a single by Edwards. A bases loaded hit-by-pitch with Marvulli at the plate scored the second run of the inning and then a passed ball allowed Webb to score from third and get Cameron back to within one run of their opposition.

Cameron tied the game with Busby's second homer of the game in the third, giving the Busby (Christensen) twins both two homer games on Sunday.

International took back the lead in the fourth on a solo homer that barely passed on the fair side of the leftfield foul pole. They added five more in the fifth via a solo homer, a two RBI single, and a two-run shot, giving the Dustdevils a 14-8 advantage.

The Aggies stranded five runners on base in the final four innings, as they were held scoreless, leading to the six-run loss. CU tallied 13 hits in the game and stranded 10 on base total.

Busby and Edwards both recorded two hits and two RBI in the second game of the doubleheader. French also had two hits, while Richmond added a trio of base knocks.

The trio of Hines, Jade Guzman, and Webb combined for a quartet of strikeouts in the circle, while giving up 14 hits, with just six of the 14 runs being of the earned variety due to a trio of CU errors.

Cameron falls to 9-9 on the season and 2-6 in league play. They will take a break from LSC competition on Tuesday, March 16, when they are scheduled to face both Fort Hays State and Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee. They return to conference action during the weekend, when they visit St. Mary's on Friday, March 19, and St. Edward's on Sunday, March 21, for a pair of doubleheaders.
