TYLER, Texas – The Cameron baseball team hung with the No. 24 ranked UT Tyler Patriots on Friday night, keeping the game tied until they were victim to a three-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth.
The Aggies entered Friday's game against the ranked Patriots on a seven-game losing skid that had them just 3-10 on the season and 3-6 in league play. They did everything they could to break that streak, but a homer in the ninth led to the 6-3 loss in game one of the three-game series.
Cameron came out of the gate in a big way, as
Ryan Carter homered in the top of the first, bringing scoring Erick Ohman, who reached via a leadoff walk, to give his team an early 2-0 advantage.
Lawton native
Michael Womack got the start on the mound, and was cruising through three innings, holding the Patriots to just three hits during that span.
Womack got into trouble in the fourth and after walking the bases loaded, Aggie skipper
Kyle Williams brought in the reliable
Tyler Garcia out of the bullpen. With no outs, Garcia allowed a run to score on a wild pitch, but a sacrifice fly would be the only other blemish as he got out of it with just two runs coming across to score.
After a scoreless fifth inning,
Jayce Clem broke the 2-2 tie with a solo homer to lead off the top of the sixth frame. However, UT Tyler answered with a leadoff solo shot of their own to tie things back up.
Neither team did much in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. A one-out single by
Nik Sanchez in the top of the ninth put pressure on the Patriots, but they were able to get out of it as
Cooper Edwards grounded out and Nate Bargo went down swinging.
Things got hairy in the bottom of the inning for Garcia. A hit batter to leadoff the frame put a runner on and a sac bunt moved him into scoring position at second. After a strikeout, Williams opted to intentionally walk the big left-hitter Riley Jepson, who was already 2-4 in the game. With two outs, Riley McShaffry, who had struck out three times prior, crushed one a ball over the right field fence to end thing the Aggies' upset bid. Â
Cameron sprayed just five hits over the nine innings against UTT, stranding six CU runners on base in the contest. Sanchez provided two of those hits, while Clem, Carter, and
Nate Vargo supplied the other three.
Womack and Garcia combined for nine strikeouts on the mound. Womack walked four and gave up four hits during his three innings of work, while Garcia gave up four hits and just one walk in 5.2 innings on the bump for CU.
Now 3-11 overall and 3-7 in league play, the Aggies will look to return the favor in the final two games of the series on Saturday. The nine-inning doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Irwin Field in Tyler.
