LAWTON – The Cameron men's tennis team's five match winning streak was snapped on Saturday after a tough 4-3 loss to the No. 3 ranked JUCO team Seward County.
The Aggies entered Saturday's match having won the last five against NCAA Division II opponents, including a 4-3 win over Northwest Missouri on Friday. They welcomed a Seward County squad who, like Cameron's previous three JUCO opponents this season, are ranked in the top-10 in their division by the ITA.
Cameron opened the back-and-forth battle against the Saints with a pair of wins in doubles play to earn the point.
Maycon Dias and
Joao Duleba kicked it off with a 6-3 win on court two, but a 6-3 loss on three meant it was down to the match on court one.
Bruno Vietri and
Oscar del Granado battled with their Seward counterparts, but eventually came away with a 7-5 win to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Dias began singles play with a 6-3, 6-1 win at two to give the Aggies a 2-0 advantage, but the Saints won the next three matches at four, one, and three to take a 3-2 lead.
Carlos Vidal pulled out a 6-3, 6-0 win at five to even things up, but
Marek Slojewski was unable to close out the win, falling 6-4, 6-3 and snapping the Aggies winning stretch.
Now 6-5 overall, the Aggies will get back to Lone Star Conference play, which they are 1-0 in, at the end of next week. They host rival Midwestern State on Friday, March 26, at 1 p.m. and then DBU on Saturday, March 27, also at 1 p.m.
