CU tennis split a pair of 6-1 matches against MSU

LAWTON – The Cameron men improved to 2-0 in Lone Star Conference play with a 6-1 win over No. 19 Midwestern State on Friday, while the CU women fell to the Mustangs by the same score.

The Aggie tennis teams faced off against their league foes Midwestern State on Friday afternoon with both schools coming away with 6-1 wins at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex.

Now 7-5 on the season, the Cameron men won their sixth straight match against Division II opponents with the five-point win over the Mustangs. The win started in doubles play when CU came back from a 1-0 deficit with a 6-3 win by Oscar del Granado and Bruno Vietri at one and a 7-5 win at two by Maycon Dias and Joao Duleba to secure the doubles point.

In singles, the Aggies suffered just one loss and that came on court one, where MSU's top man defeated Vietri 6-2, 7-5. At two, del Granado came away with a 6-3, 6-0 win, while Dias defeated Angel Palacios 6-4, 7-6 at three. Alvaro Chavez clinched the match win with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 win on court four, which was followed by two-set wins by Duleba and Carlos Vidal to close out the match.

Cameron's women fell to 7-4 on the season and 1-1 in league play with their 6-1 loss to the No. 17 ranked Mustangs. They fell behind early with losses at one and two in doubles play. CU's only pair win came at three where Pila Jaurena and Alex Lopez won 7-5.

The only other match win for the Aggies came on court three in singles play. Lopez defeated her opponent Casie Curry 7-6, 7-3, for Cameron's lone point. Four of the other five singles battles were decided in five, while Jaurena earned a 6-2 set-one win before falling in the remaining two frames.

Cameron's conference stretch continues Saturday as both squad's host DBU. The men's match is scheduled to begin at 11:30 p.m. while the women will start at around 1 p.m.
