Aggie women drop tough battle against NSU

LAWTON – The Cameron women's tennis team battled to the final match against Northeastern State on Saturday morning, but fell 4-3 to move to 7-3 on the season.

The Aggies entered Saturday's match on the heels of a 5-2 win over UAFS for their first Lone Star Conference win of the spring. They welcomed a tough non-conference foe in the Riverhawks to the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex on Saturday.

Cameron lost in two of the three doubles contests to fall behind 1-0 in the match. After falling at two, 6-4, Lea Manga and Alisa Savina answered with a 7-5 win on court one. The deciding match came on court three, where Lia Woods and Melany Opolz fell to their counterparts 7-6 (5-0).

In singles, NSU took a 2-0 lead with a win at five, while CU answered with a 6-4, 6-3 win from Pilar Jaurena at six. A two-set Riverhawk win at four gave them match-point 3-1, but the Aggies got 7-5, 6-3 win from Alex Lopez at three and a 6-3, 6-4 win from Savina on court one. The deciding point came on two, where Lea Manga battled in both sets but fell 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (6-0) to give NSU the 4-3 win.

The Aggie women are now 7-3 on the season and have lost two of their last three matches. They return to league play next weekend as they host rival Midwestern State on Friday, March 26, and then DBU on Saturday, March 27. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex.
