WICHITA FALLS, Texas –
Bethany Hines threw a three-hit shutout in the game two win while the Cameron offense had three homers and 17 hits in a doubleheader split with Midwestern State.
The Cameron softball team entered the weekend red-hot, winning five of their last six games and extended that stretch by getting a sweep of Texas Woman's on Friday to improve that to seven wins in the last eight contests. They looked to add to that and get above .500 in Lone Star Conference play when they visited rival MSU on Sunday afternoon.
Game one between the two rivals was as even as you could get. Both starters were dealing early putting up scoreless first and second innings.
Cameron score the first runs of the day in the top of the third with
Haley Castle leading things off with a solo home run, her team-leading eighth of the season. A double steal that saw
Brenna Busby come home later in the inning gave the Aggies a 2-0 advantage.
MSU answered with two more in the bottom of the frame thanks to a RBI triple by Ashley Turner and a sacrifice fly from Jacey Turner in back-to-back at-bats.
The Aggies took back the lead in the top of the fourth as
Madyson Marvulli clobbered her second homer of the season to put her team up 3-2, but the Mustangs answered right back in the bottom of the frame as Marley Eller hit a two-run shot to give the home team a one-run advantage.
Henry held the Aggies to just six hits as she cruised in the final two innings to earn her fifth win of the season. She struck out eight and did not allow the walk.
The triple and the two-run homer were the two big blemishes on
Breley Webb's line. Webb gave up just five hits but allowed two walks while striking out five in the loss.
Cameron's six hits in game one were spread across six different players, while Cameron stranded three on base and made a trio of errors.
In game two, CU head coach
Kayla Adams turned to her senior Hines in the circle and the decision proved to be the right one.
Hines, who owns the program record for wins and saves and is one of just two Aggie hurlers to eclipse 500 strikeouts for her career, had a dominant effort against the Mustangs. The Washington, Okla. product gave up just three hits and struck out seven in her first shutout of the season. Hines face just three over the minimum in her seventh win of the season, her 71st of her career.
The Aggie offense didn't need much run production for Hines, but the went ahead and provided three runs on 11 hits in the game two victory.
Khmari Edwards drove in
Kaylyn Smith on a single in the third and then in the seventh, Busby scored on a double play ball and then her sister
Callie Christensen hit a solo shot to center, her sixth of the season.
A quartet of CU players recorded multi-hit efforts in game two. Busby, Edwards, Christensen, and Smith each had a pair of hits while three others had a single hit in the win. The CU offense walked twice and struck out just three times in game two.
Cameron is now 17-11 overall this season and remain at .500 in league play with an 8-8 mark against conference opponents. They are off next weekend but will be at home on April 9-11 when they host West Texas A&M for a doubleheader and then Eastern New Mexico for a three-game series at McMahon Field.
