LUBBOCK, Texas – Just two days after splitting a doubleheader against No. 23 Angelo State, the Aggie softball team split two with No. 25 Lubbock Christian, in almost identical fashion.
Cameron was one-out away from sweeping the Belles on Friday, but a walk-off homer in the seventh led to the split. During Sunday's game one in Lubbock, another walk-off led to the Aggies going .500 during their first LSC weekend.
The Aggies trailed the Lady Chaps early, as the home team scored one run in the first and two in the second on a pair of solo homers. Cameron cut into that lead in the fourth, when a double steal and an error resulted in
Khmari Edwards crossing the plate.
Cameron's big inning in game one came in the sixth, when they scored three to take a 4-3 lead over LCU.
Brenna Busby led off the inning with a double and then scored on a run-down play following a
Mikayla Richmond single. Richmond then came in to score on a single by Edwards that tied the game.
Breley Webb provided the go-ahead run, driving in Edwards on a sacrifice fly-ball.
Webb, who came in to pitch in relief of freshman
Jocelyn Bright, had two outs with one on base in the bottom of the seventh, but back-to-back singles resulted in a run that tied the game and forced extra innings.
The Aggies went down in order in the top of the eighth, but in the bottom, a one-out double by LCU's Athena Muniz followed by a walk-off single by Alivia Villarreal gave the Lady Chaps the 5-4 game one victory.
Webb gave up just the two runs over nine hits while striking out three in her second loss of the season. Richmond and Edwards provided four, two each, of the Aggies eight hits in the game one loss.
Cameron answered in game two by scoring six runs in the first two innings. In the first, Edwards kicked things off by driving in Busby on a single to center.
Callie Christensen followed that up with a monster homer to left center that allowed both Richmond and Edwards to cross the plate.
Haley Castle led off the second inning with a solo homer of her own and then Edwards delivered again with another RBI single to bring home Busby once again and give the Aggies a 6-0 lead.
Lubbock Christian cut into the Cameron lead with single runs in their half of the second, fourth, sixth, and seventh innings, but could never get starter
Bethany Hines for a crooked inning. The senior gave up the four runs on 10 hits but did not walk a LCU hitter and struck out five in the 6-4 win, her fifth of the season and program-record 69th of her career.
Edwards again provided two hits for the Aggies, who totaled seven as a team. Christensen chipped in the three RBI on the homerun, while Busby scored two runs at the top of the CU order.
Cameron moves to 9-5 on the season and is 2-2 in league play after their first two conference doubleheaders. The league slate brings CU home for the first time all season next weekend, as they host Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday, March 12, and Texas A&M International on Sunday, March 14.
