Middle inning struggles lead to loss to Rattlers

LAWTON – A pair of big innings for St. Mary's in the middle of Saturday's finale led to a three-game sweep of the Aggies as they won game three of the series 7-3.

The Cameron University baseball team's losing skid extended to seven games after falling to the Rattlers in both games of Friday's doubleheader. They looked to snap that in the third game of the set on Saturday, but a pair of crooked number innings for the road squad in the fourth and sixth led to CU coming up short in the series finale.

The two teams matched each other in the first two innings, with CU responding to the Rattlers RBI single in the top of the first with one by Jordan Harrison-Dudley in the bottom of the frame.

A groundout in the top of the second gave the Rattlers a 2-1 advantage, but the Aggies answered back with a RBI single by Beau Williams that scored Casey Yeager who walked to leadoff the CU half of the inning.

Cameron was unable to answer the Rattlers two-run fourth and three-run sixth innings as the road squad took a 7-2 advantage with just three innings to play.

The Rattlers bullpen held the Aggies in check for the back half of Saturday's contest. Josh Buske led the way, giving up just two hits while striking out six and walking four in 4.1 innings of work to earn his second win of the season.

Cameron put pressure on the Rattlers in the eight and ninth innings. Jayce Clem singled off Colin Storms in the eighth, but nothing came of the two-out hit. Harrison-Dudley and Ryan Carter had back-to-back singles in the night, and then an error that allowed Nik Sanchez to reach base, brought home Harrison-Dudley from second base to cut into the deficit. That would be the end of the late rally as Yeager grounded into a double-play to end the game.

Marcos Feria, who has had back-to-back quality starts for CU, did not have his usual swing-and-miss stuff on Saturday. The Aggies' leader in K's struck out just three while walking four and giving up eight hits and four runs, three earned, in four innings of work.

Tyler Garcia came in to relieve Feria, giving up five hits and three runs, two earned, with a pair of strikeouts in four innings on the mound; Tyler Gregg threw a one-hit ninth inning.

Cameron recorded eight hits in the loss and stranded 14 runners on base. Williams and Harrison-Dudley each had a pair of hits, scored a run, and drove in another for the Aggies. Julian Macias reached base four times, once via a hit and then three times via walks.

The Black and Gold, now 4-21 on the season and 4-17 in league play, has a quick turnaround this week as they host Southwestern Oklahoma State for the first half of a home-and-home series. CU will face the Bulldogs on Tuesday, April 13, with first pitch slated for 3 p.m. at McCord Field.
