LAREDO, Texas – The Aggies had a season-best 11 total blocks on Saturday afternoon, but it was not enough to snap their losing skid as they fell in four sets to Texas A&M International.
Cameron's volleyball team entered the weekend looking to break a streak of eight straight losses heading into Lone Star Conference play. But after a loss to Texas A&M- Kingsville on Friday night, CU was unable to earn their second win of they year when they met up with the Dustdevils in Laredo, who were searching for their first win of the year.
The Black and Gold's 11 stuffs at the net were more than double their opponent on Saturday and they bested the home team at the service line, seven aces to six. However, CU hit just .150 on the attack and had five bad sets while TAMIU had a hitting percentage of .211 in the win.
Arianna Navarrete added to her solid weekend, leading the Aggies with 13.5 points, recording 11 kills with just two errors and three blocks. The third-year player also had 12 digs and one ace in the effort.
Presley Shearin broke out for a team-best 20 assists, while
Noemie Narbonne added an 11-assist, 12 dig double-double along with a pair of points from the service line.
Sydney Bolin led the Aggies with 19 digs in the match and
Anjolie Navarrete chipped in 14 and two aces.
Additionally,
Bergen Campbell and An. Navarrete both had 9.5 points and freshman
Jacee Stelter had 8.5 points, recording eight kills with just one error in the loss.
In the first set, the Dustdevils used an 8-1 run to take a 12-8 lead. They later closed out the frame on a 5-0 run to win 25-14.
The second set saw the International take a commanding 18-9 lead, but CU had a little comeback magic in them, scoring five and six straight capped by a block by Stelter and
Taylor Hervey that tied the frame at 21. Unfortunately, that is where the magic ran out as the home squad scored four of the last five points to win 25-22.
Cameron used a four point rally early to take a small lead over the home squad in the third. Fast-forward to a 17-15 CU lead that was followed by an 8-1 stretch capped by a block by Campbell to give the Aggies a 25-16 win.
The Aggies carried their momentum into the fourth, pulling out to a 7-1 lead early, but International came charging back and the score was tied at 11 midway through the frame. The home team then out-scored Cameron 14-5 the rest of the way to win 25-16 and take the match.
Cameron now sits at 1-11 on the year and 0-2 in conference play. They host their first LSC back-to-back of the season next weekend with Lubbock Christian visiting the Aggie Gym on Friday, Sep. 24, and then top-10 ranked Angelo State on Saturday, Sep. 25.
