LAWTON – The Cameron men look to turn their season around as they play their first games since the second day of 2022 when they host UT Permian Basin and Eastern New Mexico this week.
Due to postponements because of health and safety protocols, the Aggies have not played a game since Jan. 2 and a home game since Dec. 2. Now under the direction of
Jeff Mahoney, CU looks to turn their 0-3 league start around when they host the Falcons on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and the Rams on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Aggie Gym.
STARTING 5
1. The Aggies had similar results to start conference play, losing to Oklahoma Christian by nine points and UAFS by 11 despite shooting 50 percent from the field and 43 percent from the field in the two losses.
2. Cameron's
Brock Schreiner ranks third in the Lone Star Conference and 20th nationally with a free throw percentage of 89.7, while
Colt Savage ranks eighth in the LSC with a free throw percentage of 82.1.
3. Despite shooting 49 percent from the field, which is second best in the LSC, UT Permian Basin has lost four straight games and are now 9-7 overall and 1-3 in conference games.
4. The Falcons' DaJuan Jones leads the nation with 121 assists, averaging 7.6 per game; he also ranks ninth in the nation with a 3.46 assist/turnover ratio and was recently named to the Bevo Francis Award Top-100 Watch List.
5. Cinco Boone's 11-4 Angelo State team ranks first in the nation in free throw attempts (416) and second in free throws made (295), while also ranking in the top-20 teams in the country in steals with 9.7 per outing, led by Tyrell Carroll (2.6 spg).
ABOUT THE AGGIES
Despite falling to 2-7 on the year, the Aggies' shooting percentage jumped back over 40 percent on the season. However, the three-point shooting percentage dropped to 34 percent with 6.3 made threes per game. While CU gives up 76.7 points per game, their perimeter defense has been strong, holding teams to under 30 percent shooting from long range. Savage leads the scoring attack with 14.1 points per game to go along with five boards per contest. Schreiner adds 12.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.4 steals per game.
Connor Slater leads the team with 7.1 rebounds per game to go along with averages of 9.3 points and 1.6 blocks and
Marques Warrior Jr. leads the team with 3.6 assists per game to go along with a 7.7 scoring average.
SCOUTING THE FALCONS
UT Permian Basin has had an up and down season that now has them losing four straight and with a 9-7 overall record. They are averaging over 78 points per game and shooting 49 percent from the field, 37 percent from three, and 76 percent from the foul line, but defensively, they are giving up a field goal percentage of 47.7 percent and a three-point percentage of 35.8. They turn the ball over just 11.7 times per outing with 14.5 assists on average. Jordan Horn leads the team with 16.7 points per game while shooting 47 percent from the floor and 39 percent from three. Jones is second on the team with a 13.9 scoring average to go along with his high assist numbers, while Miles Daniels averages 13.8 points per game. Additionally, Lemmie Howard leads the team with 5.1 rebounds per outing.
LAST TIME AGAINST UTPB
UT Permian Basin was one of the teams that the Aggies played during the shortened 2020-21 season. When the two teams met in Odessa, Texas, it was tied 42-all at halftime. However, the Falcons doubled CU in free throws and shot nearly 50 percent from the field in their 85-80 win. Schreiner led the Aggies with 28 points, going 11-18 from the field and 4-4 from the charity stripe. Horn powered UTPB with 26 points, seven rebounds, and five assists in the win.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
Angelo State won seven straight games to start the new season but have since gone 4-4 to give them their 11-4 mark. They average nearly 80 points per game and are shooting 44 percent from the field and making 19.7 free throws per game at a 71 percent clip. They also give up nearly 76 points per game and their perimeter defense allows 7.3 three-pointers per contest. ASU turns teams over 16.7 times per game with an average of 9.7 steals this season. They also out-rebound teams on average but just by 3.6 boards per game. The Rams have five players who have played in all 15 games scoring over 10 points per game. Carroll leads the way with 12.8 points on average to go along with 4.1 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.6 steals per contest. Additionally, Donte Moses, Paul Williams, and Lathaniel Bastian all average over 12 points and Devaughn Thomas averages 10; Bastian also leads the team with eight rebounds per outing.
LAST TIME AGAINST ASU
The Aggies and Rams have not met since December of 2019. In that matchup, ASU shot over 53 percent from the field, while CU shot just 34 percent and were 6-23 from three.
Darius Green had 13 points off the bench for the Black and Gold, while Slater neared a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds. Williams is the top returning scorer from that game for ASU as he poured in 15 points and had six assists in the win.
WHO HAS NEXT
Cameron's schedule takes them back on the road next week for one of their shorter trips of the season. They visit DBU on Thursday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. and then rival Midwestern State for a rematch of a November meeting on Saturday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. The Aggies' next scheduled home game is Feb. 3 against West Texas A&M.
