Game Recap: Volleyball | | Chris Maple

CU Swept by No. 11 WT

CANYON, Texas – Cameron volleyball battled hard against 11th-ranked West Texas A&M, falling 0-3, 17-25, 17-25, and 24-26 in The Box Wednesday evening.
 
Anjolie Navarrete and Arianna Navarrete led the Aggies with nine kills, Caitlyn Henderson recorded three, Natalia Araujo and Jessica Lipkit added two, and Trinity Maldonado and Jacee Stelter had one.
 
Alice Tuci had a team-high 15 assists, Anjolie Navarrete dished out nine, and Meagan Jimenez and Arianna Navarrete added one.
 
Tuci, Anjolie Navarrete, and Arianna Navarrete had one ace.
 
Arianna Navarrete had a team-high 15 digs, Jimenez collected nine, Araujo scooped six, Tuci collected four, Anjolie Navarrete and Camila Bolsoni grabbed three, and Henderson, Lipkit, and Stelter added one.
 
The strong point for the Aggies this season has remained to be their defense at the net. Coming into tonight's matchup, CU and WT were first and second in the Lone Star Conference in blocking. Depending on which blocking stat you look at decides which team is leading. The Lady Buffs lead with 2.48 blocks per set, with the Aggies in second with 2.38, but looking at the number of total blocks on the season, Cameron leads the LSC with 228.0, while WT falls to fifth with 203.0. After tonight the Black-and-Gold move up to the second-best blocking team in the nation, trailing only Augusta, who has 237.0.
 
Araujo collected six blocks, Henderson added three, Lipkit and Maldonado chipped two, and Anjolie Navarrete had one.
 
West Texas opened the night with a 2-5 advantage, but the Aggies clawed back to tie the set at 6-6, 7-7, and 9-9. The Lady Buff would use a 2-7 run to take an 11-16 lead, CU would score three points to trim the score to 14-16, but West Texas used a 3-9 rally to win the opening set 17-25.
 
The second set would start in Cameron's favor at 2-1. WT would respond with a 1-4 run to take the lead at 3-5, but a 5-1 rally by the Aggies would give them an 8-6 lead. With CU leading 11-10, the Lady Buffs would go on a 3-13 run to take a controlling lead at 14-23. The Black-and-Gold would fight back with three points but fell in set two 17-25.
 
West Texas looked to be running away with the third set, starting with a 2-9 lead. Cameron would go on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to one at 8-9. WT would respond with a 1-7 rally to extend their lead to 9-16. CU would not stop fighting back down late, 18-23. They would rally five straight points to knot the score at 23-23. The Aggies would tie the game at 24-24, but back-to-back errors to close the match falling 24-26 in the third set.
 
The Black-and-Gold head to Silver City, N.M., for the final road game of the season; Cameron will take on Western New Mexico on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 7 pm.
