LAWTON –
Colt Savage made two free throws with 1.2 seconds left to give the Aggies a 66-65 win over Eastern New Mexico, their first Lone Star Conference win and the first for head coach
Jeff Mahoney.
Cameron's win on Thursday night over the Greyhounds snapped a losing streak that stretched to the first week of December and after a handful of close battles since he took over, gave Mahoney his first victory at the helm of the CU men's squad thanks to some clutch play down the stretch.
After making a season-high 12 three-pointers against A&M-Commerce on Tuesday, the Aggies were feeling it from three again on Thursday, going 9-19 from deep while also hitting all but one of their 20 free throw attempts.
Connor Slater led that charge, scoring a team-high 19 points on 5-8 shooting with three made three-pointers and a 6-7 mark from the foul line.
Cameron never led in the game by more than four points. There were 20 ties and 26 lead changes in the classic LSC battle. The home team led by three at the halftime break with both teams shooting around 38 percent from the field with the difference coming from three, where CU made six shots and ENMU made just one.
After coming back to tie the game at 38 with 17:12 to play in the second half, the Hounds used a 7-0 run to lead 49-42 with 11:22 to play. A few minutes later, they extended the advantage to ninth, the largest by any team in the game.
Cameron came clawing back down the stretch, scoring eight straight points capped by threes by Slater and
Deondre Earley to go back on top by two with 3:38 on the clock. ENMU tied it up but Slater broke the tie with a pair of free throws less than a minute later.
Three straight free throws by the Greyhounds gave them a one-point lead with 1:34 to play. The two teams traded triples to the foul line putting the score at 65-64 with just less than a minute to play.
After each team missed layups in the ensuing possession, Earley grabbed the ball off the miss and passed it ahead to Savage who got fouled driving to the lane with 1.2 ticks left to play. The always efficient guard drilled both foul shots to put CU up 66-65. ENMU's attempt at the full court pass and shot clanked off the backboard to secure the Aggie win.
Behind Slater, Earley was the only other Aggie in double-figures with 11 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Brock Schreiner added nine points and five steals while both
Kenyon Holcombe and Savage finished with seven points. Holcombe and
Nikolaos Argyropoulos tied Earley with a team-high five rebounds.
Cameron is now 3-14 on the season with a 1-9 mark in league play. Their next test is against the top-5 ranked Lubbock Christian Chaps on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 4 p.m. in the Aggie Gym.
