Stephanie Peterson made a layup with a seconds left on the clock and Eastern New Mexico missed a free throw with on the ensuing possession to give the Aggies a 73-72 Lone Star Conference win.
After a tough loss to top-10 ranked Texas A&M-Commerce on Tuesday, Cameron women's basketball bounced back with a hard-fought win over the Greyhounds that came down to the final second with CU escaping with the one-point victory, their 13th win of the year.
The game was close throughout as CU led by just three after one quarter and by six at the half. Both teams shot 41 percent in the opening 20 minutes, with CU going 9-21 from three and the Greyhounds going 6-11.
Katie King led the Aggies with 10 points and the break with
Logan Collyer and
Karley Miller each making two bit three-pointers.
Things got interesting in the third quarter when Cameron shot just 25 percent from the field, but fortunately the were only outscored by two points, 16-14, and led by four heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth, the two teams traded scores until the Hounds got two straight buckets by Iyanna Mccurdy and Natalie Stice to tie the game at 71 with just six seconds left on the clock. Out of the timeout, Cameron got the ball in Peterson's hand, who went to her sweet spot with a drive to the left to lay the ball in and give the Aggies a 73-71 lead with just a second left. A questionable foul when ENMU inbounded the ball gave them a chance to tie it, but Anasha Hurst missed the second of the two shots with Peterson grabbing the board to seal the 73-72 win.
King led the Black and Gold with 18 points on 7-15 shooting while adding seven assists, five rebounds, and a trio of steals.
Whitney Outon and
Maighan Hedge each added 11 points while Peterson finished with a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double, her fourth of the year.
In the game, Cameron shot 39 percent from the field, going 15-25 from three and 6-13 from the free throw line. They were out-rebounded 45-38, but turned ENMU over 17 times in the win.
Mccurdy led the Hounds with 24 points and nine rebounds with Stice adding 19 points.
Cameron is now 13-7 overall this season and 8-2 in league play, tying the Lions, Texas Woman's and West Texas A&M for the top spot in the league standings. They face another top-15 ranked opponent on Saturday as they host the defending National Champions Lubbock Christian starting at 2 p.m.
