LAWTON – After winning in overtime during their first meeting in the Aggie Gym this season, the Aggies are set for a rematch with Western New Mexico, this time for a Lone Star Conference battle.
On Dec. 2, 2021, Cameron hosted the Mustangs, who came back from a big second-half deficit to force overtime but the Aggies were able to come away with the win. Now with LSC records in affect the two teams meet again, this time on Drag's Court in Silver City, N.M. at 5 p.m. (CT).
STARTING 5
1. After their upset win over Lubbock Christian last Saturday, the Aggies suffered a tough loss to another ranked opponent in West Texas A&M on Tuesday, turning the ball over 24 times in the 104-64 loss.
2. Since Jan. 31, forward
Connor Slater has been a solid threat for Cameron, averaging 18.2 points and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 52 percent from the field, 31 percent from three, and 81 percent from the free throw line during the six-game span.
3. Last week, guard
Brock Schreiner became the 19th member of the program's 1,000-point club; in the month of February, the fourth-year player has averaged 17 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.0 steals while shooting 46 percent from the field, 42 percent from three, and 91 percent from the free throw line.
4. Western New Mexico has lost four straight, including an 82-56 loss against West Texas A&M on Thursday, and is now 10-11 on the season and 3-8 in league play.
5. Jordan Doss leads the Mustangs with 16.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game while Tony Avalos is averaging 12.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists for a team that forces 15.8 turnovers per game.
ABOUT THE AGGIES
Cameron's loss to WT on Tuesday halted their first two-game winning streak of the season as they are now 4-15 on the year and 2-10 in conference play, which has them tied for last in the league standings, but still in reach of the final playoff spot if there were to win out. CU averages just under 70 points per game, shooting 41 percent from the field, 33 percent from three, and 74 percent from the charity stripe, where they make 14.7 shots per outing. On the other side of the floor, the Aggies give up 81 points on average with teams shooting 46 percent from the field, 33 percent from three, and 69 percent from the free throw line against them.
Colt Savage leads the team with his 15.1 points per game. The junior win also averages 5.4 rebounds and is shooting 44 percent from the field, 41 percent from three, and 85 percent from the foul line. Schreiner is averaging 13 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.6 steals on the season and Slater is averaging 12.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 0.9 blocks per outing while shooting 50 percent from the field.
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
The 10-11 Mustangs are averaging 75 points per game while shooting 43 percent from the field, 35 percent from three, and 70 percent from the free throw line. They are giving up 74 points to their opposition, who is shooting 43 percent from the floor, 35 percent from three, and 74 percent from the charity stripe against them. WNMU averages just over 18 points off turnovers per outing with 7.7 of their takeaways coming via steals. Behind Doss and Avalos, Joshuwan Johnson averages 9.2 points and Malik Johnson is averaging 8.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.4 steals per contest.
THIS SEASON AGAINST WNMU
In Cameron's first meeting against the Mustangs the two teams needed more than 40 minutes to decide who got the win. WNMU came back from a 15-point second half deficit to tie the game at 70 and force overtime. Schreiner and Savage got to the foul line multiple times in the extra period to help CU win 82-77. The Aggies were 11-22 from three and 23-31 from the charity stripe in the win.
Deondre Earley had 17 points off the CU bench, while Savage had 14 and eight rebounds and Schreiner added 10 points and eight boards. Avalos led the Mustangs with 19 points with Johnson adding 17 and Amarion Cash chipping in 15 points.
WHO HAS NEXT
The Aggies wrap up the regular season schedule next week with a three-game homestand over the span of five days. First up is a rescheduled meeting against UT Tyler on Tuesday, Feb. 22, followed by a game against Texas A&M International on Thursday, Feb. 24. CU ends the stretch on Saturday, Feb. 26, against Texas A&M-Kingsville for Senior Day and Homecoming at Cameron.
