SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Cameron women's basketball team spread out the offensive attack as they beat Western New Mexico on Saturday by the same score as their win earlier this season against the Mustangs, 85-60.
The Aggies and WNMU met for a non-conference battle in the Aggie Gym back on Dec. 2, 2021 with CU coming away with the 25 point win. Saturday in Silver City, CU did the same thing, this time with five players scoring in double-figures for the big conference road win.
After struggling from three in their last two games, the Black and Gold got back to what they do best, knocking down 10 three pointers at a 34.5 percent clip while shooting 38.5 percent from the field. They also turned the Mustangs over 20 times, 14 coming on steals, for 30 points off turnovers in the win.
Maighan Hedge led the way offensively, scoring 19 points while going a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line and adding five rebounds and three steals.
Stephanie Peterson had a solid all-around game, recording 12 points, six rebounds, seven assists, one block, and five steals in the win.
Katie King added 12 points, seven boards, and two steals, shooting 50 percent from the floor while
Courtnee Cash and
Kassie Boorer each had 10 points for the Aggies. Cash's mark was a career-high while Boreer added six rebounds off the Aggie bench. All but one player for the Aggies scored in the win.
The shots weren't falling for the Aggies in the opening quarter as they shot just 25 percent from the field and 1-7 from three in the first 10 minutes. That allowed the Mustangs to hang around until a Peterson layup gave CU a 15-13 advantage at the end of one.
Cameron picked up the intensity in the second period, scoring 26 points, 11 off turnovers, while going 5-9 from long range. Hedge and King were key parts to that run, with each scoring eight points and making a pair of shots from long range. Peterson finished off the half with an and-one play, giving the Aggies a 41-26 lead at the break.
The Aggies were ever better shooting the ball in the second half, knocking down 46 percent of their shots, hitting four more from long range and going 6-7 from the free throw line. The scored 22 points in each of the remaining quarters to secure the 85-60 win.
Olivia Lee was the only Mustang to reach 10 points in the game as the forward recorded 14 points and 11 rebounds. WNMU shot 35.5 percent from the floor, going just 3-17 from three and 13-21 from the charity stripe.
Cameron improves to 14-9 overall this season and 9-4 in Lone Star Conference play. They will finish up the regular season with three straight home games next week. CU begins the week with UT Tyler on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 5:30 p.m. in the Aggie Gym.
