LAWTON – The Aggie women's basketball team celebrated National Division II day with a comeback win in overtime, taking down UT Tyler to move up in the Lone Star Conference standings.
NCAA Division II schools around the country celebrated D2 Day on Tuesday (2/22/22). Cameron celebrated by hosting the Patriots for the first of three games this week that would affect seeding in the upcoming conference tournament.
Neither team got off to a good start in the back-and-forth contest. UT Tyler led 11-9 through one quarter and then scored nine points in the second, while the Aggies scored just five to trail 20-14 at the break.
The Aggies shot just 16 percent (5-31) from the field and 3-16 from three in the opening 20 minutes of play. No CU player had more than three points at the break. The Patriots shot 25 percent from the field (6-25) and were 4-16 from three and 4-4 at the foul line with Louvisa Hevinder scoring 12 of their 20 points in the opening half.
Both teams started to pick it up in the third quarter with
Maighan Hedge leading the Black and Gold to with eight points as they out-scored UTT 20-16 in the period. Despite shooting 21 percent from the field and 0-7 from three in the fourth quarter, the Aggies were able to complete their comeback and led by six with 1:15 to play. CU missed seven free throws in the quarter, allowing the Patriots to come back and force overtime by tying the game at 45.
In overtime, the Aggies scored more points (18) than they did the whole first half.
Katie King and Hedge made some big three-pointers to put the Aggies up seven with 2:37 left in the extra frame. Cameron's free throw shooting woes disappeared in overtime as they went a perfect 10-10 with
Whitney Outon going 6-6 in the final minute to secure the 63-54 win.
For the game, Cameron shot 27 percent from the field, 25 percent from three, and 71 percent from the free throw line. They turned the Patriots over 26 times, 15 times on steals, resulting in 20 of their 63 points.
King led the second-half charge and finished with 20 points, matching a career high. King was 6-13 from the field and added seven rebounds in the win. Hedge finished with 16 points and three steals, while
Stephanie Peterson played great defense with eight rebounds, six steals, and three blocks for the Aggies. Outon finished with nine points and two steals as well.
Hevinder finished with 18 points to lead the Patriots, but was shut down for most of the second half when CU head coach
Emma Andrews put veteran
Logan Collyer on the shooter to keep her in check.
The Aggies improve to 15-9 overall and 10-4 in league play with the win. They moved up into a tie for sixth place in the conference standings with Texas A&M-Kingsville, who they play on Saturday. First, the Aggies must take on the Dustdevils from Texas A&M International on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 5:30 p.m.
