Cameron drops a pair of matches at UT Arlington

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Cameron tennis programs could not come away with a win as they faced off against Division I UT Arlington on Sunday with the women falling 6-1 and the men losing 5-2.

The Aggies had played just three matches each up until their battle against the Mavericks. The women were 2-1 with wins over Collin County CC and Southern Arkansas and the men were 1-2 with their win coming against Collin County.

In the women's match, UTA started off with a 1-0 lead, with Anastasia Uspenskaia and Magda Wawrowska falling 6-3 at one and Lea Manga and Kateryna Rudenko losing 6-0 at three.

Cameron's lone point came from Vasilisa Polunova winning 6-4, 6-2 at the one singles spot. All but one other match went to the Mavericks in two sets. Uspenskaia led her match at three 7-5 before her opponent won 6-4 and 13-11 in the second and third to claim the win.

The doubles play in the men's match was closer than the women. Joao Duleba and Kristian Kubik at two and Tomas Almeida and Thomas Cardona at three each lost their matches 6-3 while Carlos Vidal and Baptiste Mercier were up 5-4 in their match at one before being called.

Mercier earned the win at one singles when his opponent had to withdraw due to retirement and then Almeida won 6-3, 6-7, 10-5 at two for Cameron's second point of the match. Alvaro Chavez also battled in three sets at five, losing 6-1, 3-6, 10-6, while the other three matches went to UTA in two sets.

Both teams will play their first matches at home on Monday, Feb. 21, hosting Cowley County CC at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex. The men and women's matches are scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
