Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

CU women beat Cowley 6-1, men fall by same score

LAWTON – The Cameron tennis programs played their first home match of the spring hosting Cowley County College on Monday with the Aggie women winning 6-1 and the men losing by the same score.

Both Aggie squads have played some tough teams to start their spring and the case was the same at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex on Monday when a pair of top-3 ranked Tiger teams came to town. The CU women were able to come away with a dominant win while the men had a harder time with their JUCO counterpart.

In the women's match, Cameron came away with all three doubles wins with Vasilisa Polunova and Karolina Glowinska winning 6-0 at two, Anastasia Uspenskaia and Magda Wawrowska winning 6-3 at one and Lea Manga and Kateryna Rudenko also winning 6-3 at three.

Uspenskaia and Rudenko both made quick work of their matches at three and four to give the Aggies a 3-0 lead and then Julianne Garcia sealed the win with a 6-1, 6-4, win at six. Glowinska also won in two sets while Manga came back from a first set loss to win her match at two in three frames. Polunova and opponent Isid Hernandez battled at one, but Hernandez won the third set 14-12 to earn the point.

Cameron's men earned just one win in doubles play against the Tigers with Thomas Cardona and Tomas Almeida winning 6-3 at the three spot. Alvaro Chavez and Joao Duleba fought hard at two but fell 6-4 to their Cowley opponents.

Cardona was the only Aggie to earn a win in singles, winning 6-4, 6-2 at the three spot. The rest of the five matches were decided in two sets with the Tigers coming away on top 6-1.

Later this week the two teams will be competing for the first time this spring against different opponents. The 3-2 CU women are scheduled to take on Columbus State in Oklahoma City on Thursday, Feb. 24, while the men are next scheduled to play Newman on Saturday, Feb. 26.
