Men's basketball hosts No. 18/20 WT for non-conference battle

LAWTON – The Cameron men play their final non-conference game of the season as they host No. 18/20 West Texas A&M on Saturday in the Aggie Gym. 
 
Due to winter weather that hit the area early this week, the Aggie men's basketball team is the only Cameron get to host the first game at Aggie Gym in the month of February. However, CU has been on the town turn, losing nine straight, including three during their recent road trip. They welcome a top-25 ranked Buffs team to Lawton on Saturday at 2 p.m. 
 
STARTING 5 
1. Cameron has lost nine straight games since beating Western New Mexico at home on Dec. 2 in overtime, giving them a 2-12 overall record and an 0-8 league mark; their two wins this season came at home. 
2. Both Colt Savage and Connor Slater had 20-point outings in CU's loss to St. Mary's with Savage scoring 23 points with four made three-points and Slater adding 21 points on 8-12 shooting from the field. 
3. The West Texas A&M Buffs are 19-5 on the season but have gone 6-4 in league play after losing in overtime 100-98 to the Rattlers back on Tuesday; the team started out the season 13-1 before starting league play on Dec. 31. 
4. Led by Larry Wise, Zach Toussaint, and Kavon Booker the Buffs are second in the nation in free throws made (367) hitting them at a 74.1 percent clip which ranks third best in the Lone Star Conference. 
5. WT leads the all-time series over the Aggies, especially recently as they have won 10 straight including an overtime game in 2018 and a four-overtime game in 2017.
 
ABOUT THE AGGIES
Cameron now sits at 2-12 overall and 0-8 in league play after going 0-3 over their three-game road trip this past week. They currently sit at the bottom of the LSC standings, behind Texas A&M-Kingsville with a 1-5 record in conference play. They average just 67.2 points per game while shooting 40 percent from the field and 33 percent from three. Their best offensive skill is getting to the foul line, making 15.1 free throws per contest at a 73 percent clip. Defensively, the Black and Gold gives up 79.4 points per outing with teams shooting 46 percent against them while making 8.1 three-pointers at a 33 percent clip from deep. The Aggies turn the ball over just 14 times per game, but struggle forcing turnovers as well, with teams giving the ball up 11.2 times on average. 
 
Individually, Savage, Slater, and Brock Schreiner lead the way offensively, all scoring over 10 points per game. Savage averages 14.9 points and 5.4 rebounds while shooting over 47 percent from three. Schreiner averages 11.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.4 steals per outing. Slater adds 10.3 points per game while averaging a team-high 6.3 rebounds and 1.2 blocks while shooting over 50 percent from the field. 
 
SCOUTING THE BUFFS
Despite their struggles in league play, WT is still averaging 81 points per game while shooting 43.5 percent from the floor and 33 percent from three. Defensively, they give up 67.5 points on average with teams shooting 41.5 percent against them from the field. The Buffs out-rebound teams by an average of 5.3 boards per game and turn the ball over just 10.5 times on average while forcing their opponents into 15 turnovers with 7.4 steals per outing. 
 
Toussaint leads the team with 15.5 points per game while shooting 42 percent from deep and 92 percent from the charity stripe. Wise averages 14.8 points and 4.7 rebounds while Julius Brown averages 13 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.7 steals. Booker averages a team-high 6.6 rebounds with Hayden Blankley adding 5.3 boards per game. 
 
LAST TIME AGAINST WT
Cameron and WT played two completely different games last season in the Aggie Gym. The first was an 86-82 point loss that saw CU comeback from being down 17 to within one-point of the Buffs late in the second half. Schreiner had 11 points and Slater added a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double while Toussaint and Booker combined for 26 points for WT, who went to the foul line 40 times in the win. The next day, WT dominated CU 103-50, shooting over 52 percent from the field. 
 
WHO HAS NEXT
Cameron's homestand continues next week with three conference games in the span of five days in the Aggie Gym. First up is a battle with Texas A&M-Commerce on Tuesday, Feb. 8, followed by Eastern New Mexico on Thursday, Feb. 10. The homestand concludes on Saturday, Feb. 12, when CU hosts top ranked Lubbock Christian.
