LAWTON – The Cameron men begin the home stretch of the 2021-22 season as they host Texas A&M-Commerce, Eastern New Mexico, and top-ranked Lubbock Christian this week in the Aggie Gym.
The Aggies have just three more weeks left on the regular season schedule, but those three weeks are full of tough Lone Star Conference matchups staring this week. CU hosts the Lions on Tuesday night, followed by the Greyhounds on Thursday, and then finish off the homestand against the No. 1 ranked Chaps on Saturday.
STARTING 5
1. Coming off a game where they gave West Texas A&M all they could, the Aggies are in the midst of a 10-game losing skid; but both of their wins this season have come at home, where they have three chances this week to earn their first league win.
2. Cameron's leading scorer
Colt Savage averaged 21.5 points and 6.5 rebounds while knocking down six three-pointers over the two-game span; he is currently 10th in the LSC in scoring (15.2) and seventh with 2.5 made triples per game.
3. At 15-4 overall this season, A&M-Commerce ranks first in the LSC in three-point shooting (10.4 3fgpg) and first in the conference and second in Division II with 6.1 blocks per game led by the division leader in blocks Clashon Gaffney (3.0 bpg).
4. After winning back-to-back conference games over Oklahoma Christian and UAFS, the Greyhounds have lost seven straight, falling to 6-13 overall in Brent Owen's first full season as head coach.
5. The top-ranked Chaps are the top shooting team in the LSC at 51.7 percent and the top defensive team, holding teams to 61.1 points per game and a field goal percentage of 38.4 percent; Parker Hicks leads the LSC with eight double-doubles this season.
ABOUT THE AGGIES
Cameron, now 2-13 on the year, averages 67.5 points per game while giving up nearly 80 to their opposition. CU shoots 40 percent from the field and makes 6.3 triples per game at a 32.3 percent clip. Their offensive strength comes by getting to the foul line, where the make 14.9 free throws per outing at a 72.2 percent clip. CU turns the ball over less than 14 times per game, but on the other side of the floor averages just 5.7 steals and 11.1 turnovers forced. Savage,
Brock Schreiner, and
Connor Slater are the only Aggies' averaging over seven points. Schreiner scores 11.9 points per game while Slater averages 10.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per outing.
SCOUTING THE LIONS
Like most teams in the LSC, the 15-4 Lions are solid on both sides of the ball. A team that has won four of their last five games, they are averaging 75.4 points per game while shooting 47.5 percent from the field and 40 percent from three. A&M-C has five players averaging over 10 points per game led by Alphonso Willis and Jairus Roberson with 12.2 points per game each. Willis also averages 6.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.6 steals, while Demarcus Demonia averages 10.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists. Additionally, Gaffney averages 8.7 points and 4.7 rebounds to go along with his league-leading three blocks per outing.
SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS
Like the Aggies, ENMU's struggles have come on defense, where they are giving up over 79 points per game and a .458 shooting percentage. Teams really hurt them from deep, averaging 9.7 three-point field goals made at a 38 percent clip against them. On offense, the Greyhounds average just over 70 points and shoot 42.4 percent from the field but turn the ball over 17.3 times per game resulting in an average of 20 points for their opposition. Kentrell Pullian leads the team with 12 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game, while Adam Hess adds 10.1 points and 3.2 rebounds per outing.
SCOUTING THE CHAPS
Lubbock Christian suffered their first loss of the season last weekend, falling 75-73 to DBU on their home court. Still, LCU out-scores teams by an average of almost 17 points, shooting 52 percent from the field and nearly 40 percent from three. They also turn the ball over just 10 times per contest while averaging 16.1 assists. Hicks averages 17.8 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. Lloyd Daniels averages 16.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 5.0 assists while Aamer Muhammad averages 15.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.9 assists for the top ranked Chaps.
THIS SEASON AGAINST LCU
The Aggies and Chaps met back in December at the Rip Griffin Center for a non-conference meeting. During that battle, CU trailed by seven at the half, but was out-scored 44-24 in the second half to lose 87-60. The Chaps made 50 percent of their shots and hit 11 triples in the win while CU shot just 35.6 percent from the floor.
Alex Gonzalez led the Black and Gold with 12 points and a perfect shooting night off the bench while Slater added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Daniels led a group of five LCU players in double-figures with 22 points with Hicks recording one of his eight double-doubles with 19 points and 10 boards.

Next week the Aggies make their final road trip of the regular season, visiting West Texas A&M, this time for a conference game, on Tuesday, Feb. 15, before heading out to Western New Mexico on Saturday, Feb. 19. Cameron then wraps up the home schedule with three games Feb. 22, 25, and 26.
