Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Schreiner catches fire in tough loss to A&M-Commerce

LAWTON – Brock Schreiner's monster game was not enough to hold off a second-half comeback by Texas A&M-Commerce, who won at the Aggie Gym 85-81, preventing CU from earning their first conference loss.

The Cameron men gave the Lions, one of the best teams in the Lone Star Conference, all they could on Tuesday night, but late turnovers were costly as A&M-Commerce came back from an 11-point second half deficit to earn the win on the Aggie Gym.

Schreiner was on fire for the Aggies, especially in the first half when he scored 20 points on 7-10 shooting. The fourth-year guard finished with 29 points, going 10-16 from the field, 6-9 from three, and 3-3 from the charity stripe. He also added five assists and three steals while finishing two points shy of a career high.

As a team, Cameron shot a season-best 50 percent from the field while knocking down a season-high 12 three pointers and going a perfect 9-9 from the foul line. However, the Lions were just as good, shooting 49 percent from the floor and going 8-25 from three.

In addition to Schreiner's near 30-point effort, CU got 19 points and six rebounds from Connor Slater, 15 points from Colt Savage and a nine-point, 12-rebound game from big-man Kenyon Holcombe. Deondre Earley also had seven points, five rebounds, seven assists, and two steals while John Muhammad had the other two Aggie points.

Cameron came out and stunned the Lions, leading for most of the opening half. After the road team cut the CU lead to three on a Carson Tuttle three, the Aggies got buckets from Savage, Slater, and Schreiner to carry a 45-36 lead into the break.

Led by Schreiner, CU shot nearly 57 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes while hitting seven of their 13 shots from long range. Savage and Slater each had seven points at the half.

After extending their lead to 11 on a Savage three with 16:18 to play, the Lions came back and took their first lead since the opening minutes of the first half on a three by Khaliq Abdul-Mateen with 12:12 to play. Schreiner, Savage, and Slater led another CU charge the put them back up by eight, but A&M-Commerce erased that quickly, tying things at 69 with 5:24 to play.

Neither team led by more than three points in the final minutes until Jarius Roberson put the Lions up by five with a three pointer with 1:16 to play, which followed a CU turnover. After a missed triple by the Aggies, both teams gave the ball away, with Cameron's turnover leading to a put-back by big-man Clashon Gaffney.  Now down by seven, another CU turnover led to a missed opportunity to cut down the lead. A last second three by Earley set the final score at 85-81.

Alphonso Willis led the Lions with 28 points and seven assists, while Roberson had 12 and Gaffney added a 10 point, 11-rebound double-double.

Another tough loss for Cameron, their 11th straight, sets their record at 2-14 overall and 0-9 in league play. They are back in the Aggie Gym on Thursday night when they host the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds at 7:30 p.m.
