PLANO, Texas – Both Cameron tennis teams started their spring 1-1, each beating Collin County CC and then losing to top-ranked junior college teams Tyler JC on Wednesday.
After being delayed a week due to weather, the Aggies made their spring debut in on Wednesday in Plano, Texas, taking on a pair of top-10 ranked programs in the junior college ITA rankings.
The CU women started the day with a 7-0 win over eighth ranked Collin. They earned the doubles point with a 6-0 win from
Karolina Glowinska and
Vasilisa Polunova at two and 6-2 wins from
Magda Wawrowska and
Anastasia Uspenskaia at one and
Kateryna Rudenko and
Lea Manga at three.
All six Aggie student-athletes won their singles matches in two sets, including Rudenko, who swept her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at the four spot.
Cameron then lost 6-1 to the top-ranked Apache squad falling behind 1-0 after doubles action. CU's lone win in pairs came from Manga and Rudenko, who earned a 6-2 victory at No. 3.
Rudenko was the only Aggie to stay perfect in singles play to start the season, winning 6-1, 6-4 at four. Polunova at one, Uspenskaia at two, and
Pilar Jaurena at the six spot all went three sets in their matches against TJC.
For the men, the Aggies opened the season with a 6-1 win over Collin. They swept doubles action with
Thomas Cardona and
Tomas Almeida winning 6-1 at three and
Carlos Vidal and
Baptiste Mercier at one and
Joao Duleba and
Kristian Kubik at two each winning 6-2.
Cameron's lone singles loss came at five where Duleba lost in three sets. Vidal won his match at two in three sets, while the other four matches were won in two by the Black and Gold.
The Aggies had a tougher time with the No. 1 ranked Apaches. They started the match on the high side, getting a 6-2 win from Cardona and Almeida at three and a 7-5 win from Vidal and Mercier at one to take the 1-0 lead.
Cameron's only other win in the match came at three where Almeida won 6-4, 6-1. Mercier at one, Cardona at four, and
Alvaro Chavez at six all took their opponents to three sets but could not finish them off for wins.
Now with their season openers under their belt, the Cameron squads will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 12, when both take on Southern Arkansas in Midlothian, Texas. The two matches are scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
