CU women down Bearcats 6-1, men battle to 4-3 win

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Cameron's women won their seventh straight match 6-1 over Northwest Missouri State while the men went down to the wire against the Bearcats in a 4-3 win, their fifth straight.

Cameron's women continued their dominant run through their schedule, winning all but of one the points against the Bearcats on Monday.

In doubles, CU got a 6-3 win from Magda Wawrowska and Anastasia Uspenskaia at one before NWMSU evened things up with a 6-3 win at three. Vasilisa Polunova and Karolina Glowinska fought off their opponent at two to win 7-5 and earn the point for CU.

The decision of the match came early in singles play as Polunova, Lea Manga, and Uspenskaia won their matches at one, two, and three in two sets to give their team a 4-0 lead and the early win. The Bearcat's only point came in a two-set win at five while Glowinska won in two at six and Kateryna Rudenko won 11-9 in a match tiebreak to give the Aggies their sixth point.

Cameron's men needed a little more excitement to earn their win over Northwest Missouri State. After Tomas Almeida and Thomas Cardona won 6-1 at three to start doubles, the two teams battled for the decisive win. The 25th ranked duo of Franco Oliva and Andrea Zamurri beat Carlos Vidal and Kristian Kubik 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreak score at one. Joao Duleba and Alvaro Chavez came up big for CU with a 7-6 (7-5) win at two to give their team a 1-0 lead.

That point would prove costly as singles play was just as tight. Cardona pulled off a 603, 7-6 (7-1) win over No. 19 Oliva at two, but the Bearcats answered with a 3-set win by No. 5 Zamurri at one. Vidal put CU up 2-1 with a 3-set victory at three. Northwest answered with a pair of 2-set wins at four and five to even up the match at 3-3. Duleba played in the decisive match at six, coming back from a 7-5 loss in set one to win set two 6-3 and the third 6-2 to give the Aggies the 4-3 win.

The Aggie women are now 9-2 this spring with the men improving to 6-4 on the year with a 5-1 mark against Division II opponents.

Cameron has another tough slate of back-to-back matches next weekend as they visit DBU on Friday, March 18, for their first pair of Lone Star Conference battles and then take on Auburn-Montgomery on Saturday, March 19.
