No. 5 Aggies win 4-3 thriler, No. 25 CU men fall by same score to UT Tyler

LAWTON – The ranked Cameron tennis teams hosted Lone Star Conference foe UT Tyler on Friday with the women coming away with a 4-3 win, their 10th straight, and the men falling by the same score to the Patriots.

Both Aggie teams have had a great start to the spring and have been paid off by both being ranked in the top-25 by the ITA on Thursday when the latest rankings came out. In their first home conference matches of the season the fifth ranked Aggie women outlasted UTT 4-3 while the Pats won 4-3 in the battle with No. 25 CU.

In the women's match, Cameron got a big doubles point win when Vasilisa Polunova and Karolina Glowinska won the tiebreak point 7-6 to win the battle at two 7-6 after Magda Wawrowska and Anastasia Uspenskaia won 6-4 at one.

Despite the 1-0 lead for CU, it came down to the final set of singles play to decide Friday's battle. UT Tyler came away with quick wins at one and two while Uspenskaia won 6-3, 6-2 at two to tie the match. Glownska gave the Aggies a 3-2 lead with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win at six, but the Patriots evened things back up with a 3-set win at five. At four, after winning the first set 7-5, Kateryna Rudenko lost set two 6-3. She then bounced back with a 6-4 win to secure the win and the match-point for CU.

The victory extends the top-5 ranked Aggies' win streak to 10 matches and moves them to 12-2 on the year and 2-0 in league play.

Taking on the 50th ranked team according to the ITA, the CU men fell behind in their match, losing at one and two in doubles play; Tomas Almeida and Thomas Cardona won 6-1 at three.

Like the women's match, the battle between Cameron and UT Tyler's men came down to the final point. Almeida got a win over No. 24 Joaquin Bianchi 6-2, 6-2 at one and then the 25th ranked Cardona won 6-1, 7-5 over No. 18 Gonzalo Fernandez at two. Carlos Vidal gave CU their third point with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win at three. The Patriots then won the three remaining matches in two sets to secure the 4-3 win.

With their second straight loss, the Aggies move to 7-6 overall this season and 1-1 in Lone Star Conference matches.

Both Cameron tennis teams will visit St. Mary's for a pair of matches on April Fools' Day, April 1, in San Antonio, Texas.
