SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Both Cameron tennis teams came away with Lone Star Conference wins on Friday as the fifth ranked women won 5-2 over No. 47 St. Mary's and the CU men won 4-3 over the Rattlers.
The Aggie women, ranked No. 5 in Division II by the ITA, remained unbeaten in both conference play and division play with their win over the Rattlers, moving to 13-2 on the season and 3-0 in LSC matches.
Cameron got the benefit of a 1-0 lead after doubles play thanks to a 6-0 win from the 30th ranked duo of
Anastasia Uspenskaia and
Magda Wawrowska at one and then a 6-4 win by
Vasilisa Polunova and
Karolina Glowinska at two.
St. Mary's started off singles play by tying the match at one with a win at four. Cameron answered by battling in a trio of 3-set matches at one, two and three. Polunova came back from a 7-5 set one loss to win the remaining 6-4, 6-1 while
Lea Manga won 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 at three. Now leading 3-1, CU got the deciding point from Uspenskaia, also responded from a 7-5 loss in the opening frame to win the final two 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. The two teams split the final two points with
Pilar Jaurena picking up a 6-2, 6-4 win at five to earn the 5-2 victory for her team.
Cameron's, No. 34 in Division II, men earned their eighth win this spring (8-6) and are now 2-1 in league play after taking down the Rattlers.
The Aggie men also started out their match with the Rattlers with a 1-0 lead, getting a 6-2 win from
Thomas Cardona and
Tomas Almeida at two and a 6-4 win from
Marek Slojewski and
Joao Duleba at three.
Cardona and Almeida gave Cameron a 3-0 lead to start singles with 2-set wins at two and one. After the Rattlers got on the board with a win at four,
Carlos Vidal secured the CU win with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory in the three spot. StMU won the final two points to set the final score at 4-3.
Cameron's women will be back in action next weekend, April 8 and 9, when they host Texas A&M-Kingsville and Angelo State while the men will host Seward County the following day on Sunday, April 10.
