Webb and early runs lead Aggies to game one win of twin bill split with MSU

LAWTON – Cameron jumped out to an early lead in game one against Midwestern State on Sunday to win 8-0 before losing a late lead and falling 5-4 in game two.

The Aggies entered the twin-bill with the rival Mustangs having split their last four Lone Star Conference doubleheaders after doing so on Friday against Texas Woman's. The streak was extended to five on Sunday as MSU used a seventh inning comeback to win the second game of the day after being run-ruled in the first.

Like she did Friday against the Pioneers, Breley Webb dominated the visiting lineup in the opener, holding them to just three hits and one walk while striking out six batters for her eighth win of the season.

Webb was helped out by a 7-run first inning that saw Madyson Marvulli hit a 3-run homer, her first of the year, and Karis Clark cap the frame with a RBI single to center.

After going scoreless in the next three frames, CU got their eighth run to earn the run-rule victory in the bottom of the fifth. Khmari Edwards came up clutch with a 2-out single that allowed Alyssa Deanda to score and end the game 8-0.

Webb also had two hits at the plate while Marvulli had another one of CU's nine hits on the 3-run blast in the first.

Midwestern State were finally able to get their lineup going to start game two, scoring two runs in the first on a pair of 2-out singles. The then added another in the third on a sun-aided triple with two outs by Mikey Dominguez that allowed Peyton Lee to score.

Cameron answered with three straight runs as Kaiden Boren hit a solo homer and Kylie French singled in Haley Castle and Edwards with two outs in the third.

With the game tied, Josie Swafford, who had settled in in the circle, helped out her cause with a solo homer to lead off the sixth and give the Aggies a 4-3 lead.

In the top of the seventh, down to their last two outs, MSU got a solo homer by Bailey Brenek off Swafford to tie the game at four and then a double by Lee to put the go-ahead run on.

After CU skipper Kayla Adams brought Webb in to limit the damage, a passed ball allowed the pinch runner at second to advance. That proved big as the next ball was flied to right by Dominguez, allowing the runner from third to score and give MSU the 5-4 lead. Webb got the final out on her seventh K of the doubleheader to send it to the bottom of the frame.

Maci McMurtrey gave the Aggies a shot to start their half of the seventh by hitting a leadoff single into left field. Kennedy Cameron got the next three batters to pop out to secure her fourth win in the circle and MSU's sixth as a team this season.

Swafford gave up three earned runs on 12 hits with 10 strikeouts, stranding eight MSU runners on base. Webb got the final two outs in the seventh and had one strikeout.

Cameron's five hits were spread across five players with French driving in a pair of runs on her single in the third. CU struck out eight times and stranded five runners against MSU's starter Cameron.

The split moves the Aggies to 19-15 overall this season and 7-9 in league play. They are back on the road next weekend, visiting West Texas A&M on Friday, April 1, and then Eastern New Mexico on Sunday, April 3.
