Aggie softball drops a pair at No. 20 WT

CANYON, Texas – Despite five hits from Khmari Edwards, the Aggie offense struggled to get the big hit as they dropped both games of a doubleheader at No. 20 West Texas A&M on Friday, 4-1 and 12-2.

Cameron entered the weekend having split their last Lone Star Conference twin bills, but facing another top-25 ranked opponent in the Lady Buffs, the Aggies suffered their first series loss since March 12 while scoring just three runs in two games against WT.

The top of the Aggie order did a good job of setting the table in game one as Edwards (three) and Karis Clark (two) combined for five of the team's eight hits with Josie Swafford adding two more.

Cameron could not come through with the big hit against WT starter Heidi Vortherms as they stranded seven runners on base including three in the third where they loaded the bases with just one out.

West Texas had the same issue against Breley Webb except for in the second inning. The Lady Buffs got a pair of 2-out RBI hits to take an early 3-0 lead.

Cameron's lone run in the opener came in the fifth when the throw down to try and nab Edwards stealing second went into the outfield, allowing Maci McMurtrey to score from third. WT added another run in the bottom of the frame to set the score at 4-1.

Webb, who has been on her game recently, gave up the four runs on 10 hits and one walk while failing to record a strikeout against the top-20 ranked Lady Buffs. Vortherms struck out eight Aggie hitters on the way to the win.

Cameron got on the board out of the gate in game two as back-to-back 2-out singles by Kylie French and Webb put two on for Josie Swafford who doubled in a run. WT answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame and then seven in the second to take an 8-1 lead.

The Aggies' second run came in the third as Edwards, who singled to lead off the frame, scored on a ground out off the bat of French. The Lady Buffs came right back and scored one in the bottom of the frame and then scored three in the fourth to take a 12-2 lead, which they held on to in the fifth for the run-rule win.

West Texas A&M scored six runs on five hits against CU's starter Swafford, who had one strikeout during her 1.1 inning of work. Jocelyn Bright worked the final 2.2 frames, giving up five earned runs on four hits and five walks.

Cameron's lineup combined for six hits while stranding five runners on base in the loss. Edwards and French each had two hits in the loss; Edwards led the Black and Gold with five hits in the doubleheader.

The two losses set the Aggies' record to 19-17 overall and 7-11 in league play. They will look to make up for the twin bill sweep on Sunday when they visit Eastern New Mexico for two games. Game one of the doubleheader in Portales, N.M. is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CT).
