LAWTON – Despite some late-inning drama, the Aggies opened their series against Oklahoma Christian on Friday with an 8-6 win led by five extra-base hits.
For just the second time this season, the Cameron baseball team started a Lone Star Conference series with a win, using a big 5-run fifth to lead by six heading into the final frame. OC mounted a comeback in the ninth, but CU was able to weather the storm to earn the win.
With
Tyler Cornett on the mound for the Aggies, OC got on the board first with a run in the third, but Cameron answered with two in the bottom of the frame as
Beau Williams drove in
Julian Macias and
Erik Ohman.
Two innings later, the home team put up a five spot to extend their lead to 7-1.
Jordan Harrison-Dudley got a double off the left field wall that scored Ohman and then Williams recorded another RBI on a groundout that scored Macias. Harrison-Dudley scored on a
Zac DeLong single for the third run of the frame.
Tyler Coleman capped the inning with a 2-run homer, his second long ball of the season.
Cameron added an eighth run in the bottom of the sixth as
Jayce Clem and Williams combined for back-to-back doubles that saw Williams cross the plate.
After giving up the run in the third, Cornett was dominant, striking out nine batters during his 6-inning start while giving up just the one run on two hits. Donavan Greenwell added three K's while giving up two hits and a run during his two innings of work for CU.
Oklahoma Christian mounted their comeback in the top of the ninth, getting to reliever
Carter Bourg for four runs, three earned, on four hits and a walk.
Kyle Williams went to the team's ERA leader
Evan Nichols to shut the door and the big right-hander did so by recording the final three outs for the save.
Ohman led the Aggie lineup with three hits and scored a pair of runs, while Williams, Clem, and Coleman all had a pair of hits. Williams also drove in three runs with Coleman bringing home two on his homer.
The win moves the Aggies up into the seventh spot in the LSC standings as they are now 11-16 in league play and 11-18 overall this spring. They will look to go for the series win on Saturday as the two teams meet again for a pair of 7-inning contests scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at McCord Field.
