CU women down rival MSU, Aggie men fall to Mustangs

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Cameron tennis teams made the short trip across the Red River to battle rival Midwestern State on Tuesday as the two teams split the Lone Star Conference matches. 
 
The Aggie women, ranked No. 6 by the ITA, had their winning streak ended on Saturday with a 5-2 loss to No. 35 Angelo State. They started a new streak on Tuesday with a 4-3 win over the 43rd ranked Mustangs, while the 35th ranked CU men lost their second league match to No. 40 MSU 5-2. 
 
In the women's match, CU started with a 6-1 win by Lea Manga and Kateryna Rudenko at three and then the 18th ranked duo of Anastasia Uspenskaia and Magda Wawrowska won 6-3 over the 24th ranked duo of Anda Ghinga and Hannah Yip to secure the doubles point. 
 
CU's two duo of Vasilisa Polunova and Karolina Glowinska dropped their match to another ranked MSU pair 6-3.  
 
The Aggies had the match won after the first three singles decisions. No. 31 Polunova kicked things off with a 6-3, 6-3 win over a ranked opponent at one and then No. 35 Manga won 7-5, 6-3 at three. CU's fourth point came at four as Rudenko won 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. MSU was able to in two sets at five and then battled in 3-set matches at two and six to make the score 4-3. 
 
Cameron is now 15-3 overall and 5-1 in league play, keeping their spot in a three-way tie for first place in the LSC standings with ASU and St. Mary's. 
 
The men's match started in favor of the Mustangs. Tomas Almeida and Thomas Cardona suffered just their fourth loss of the season at one, 6-3 to the second ranked duo of Alex Martinez Roca and Ben Westwick. Kristian Kubik and Carlos Vidal then fell 6-4 at two to give MSU the doubles point before Joao Duleba and Marek Slojewski won 6-4 at three. 
 
Midwestern State extended their lead with wins at four and three to start singles but CU got on the board with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 win by the 20th ranked Cardona at two. Almeida earned a win at one, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, over the 16thranked Martinez Roca to make it 3-2 but MSU claimed the final two points at six and five to win the match. 
 
Cameron's men are now 9-7 this spring with a 2-2 record against conference opponents, which has them in fourth in the league standings with three LSC matches left on the regular season schedule. 
 
Two of those three remaining conference matches come this weekend at home as both Aggie tennis teams host UT Permian Basin at 12 p.m. on Friday, April 15, and then Western New Mexico at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 16.
