COMMERCE, Texas – Apart from a
Madyson Marvulli 3-run home run in game one, the Aggie lineup was held in check during their doubleheader against No. 19 Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday evening.
Cameron tallied just six hits to kick off their final road trip of the regular season against the ranked Lions, snapping a 6-game winning streak with 8-3 and 8-0 losses to move to 25-19 overall and 13-13 in Lone Star Conference play with just four more games left on the schedule.
In game one, the Aggies fell behind early as the Lions scored three runs in the second, one in the third, and then two more in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead against starter
Breley Webb.
Cameron got that lead in half in the top of the fifth. After a single by
Kaiden Boren and a double by
Haley Castle, senior
Madyson Marvulli collected a trio of RBI on a home run to left field off Lion starter Emily Otto.
The home team answered with two more in the sixth on their second homer of the game to put them on top 8-3. CU tried to mount a two-out rally in the top of the seventh as
Maci McMurtrey singled and then Castle reached on a hit-by-pitch. However, Otto got the last say against Marvulli, striking her out to end the game.
Of the six runs that scored while she was pitching, Webb was credited with just three earned runs coming on seven hits in her 3.2 innings in the circle; she struck out three Lion hitters.
Josie Swafford gave up the remaining two runs on two hits and two walks while recording four K's.
Cameron totaled four hits in game one against Otto, struck out four times, and did not draw a walk. Marvulli had the big game with the three RBI on the home run while Castle, Boren, and McMurtrey had the other three hits.
Just a few days after throwing a no-hitter, the Lion's Alyssa LeBlanc flirted with the feat again in game two against the Aggies, holding the CU lineup to just two hits, both singles off the bat of
Karis Clark and Swafford.
Aggie starter
Jocelyn Bright held the Lions in check for the first three innings, but the A&M-Commerce lineup came alive late, scoring five runs on two homers and a triple in the fourth and then three more in the fifth to earn the run-rule win thanks to a solo homer and a 2-RBI single.
Bright gave up six runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out seven Lion hitters during her 4.1 innings of work. Swafford finished off the game, giving up two runs on one hit and two walks while striking out a pair.
It does not get any easier for the Aggies as they visit No. 1 UT Tyler on Sunday, April 24, for another conference twin bill with game one scheduled to start at 1 p.m. in Tyler, Texas.
