LAWTON – The Aggie softball team closed out their regular season on Saturday by dropping a pair of games to No. 15 Oklahoma Christian, 6-3 and 3-1, at McMahon Field.
For the third straight twin bill, Cameron had to battle a top-20 ranked opponent as they hosted the Eagles. CU was in both games, but ultimately it was the visiting Eagles that came away with two wins heading into the Lone Star Conference postseason next week.
In the opener, OC scored first, getting a run in the top of the second, but the Aggies quickly answered as
Maci McMurtrey and
Khmari Edwards both had RBI singles in the bottom of the frame to give the home team a 2-1 lead.
Oklahoma Christian followed that frame with one run in the third and then back-to-back 2-run innings in the fifth and sixth to take a 6-2 lead. Cameron got one of those back in the bottom of the seventh as McMurtrey scored on an error by the OC third baseman. OC starter Grace Anderson was able to get a double play to end the game with a 6-3 win.
Breley Webb started the game in the circle for CU, going 5.1 innings and giving up six runs on 10 hits and three walks. She also struck out three batters while
Josie Swafford finished off the game by giving up no hits with a K in 1.2 innings of work.
Cameron totaled six hits against Anderson with Edwards and Swafford each tallying two and
Karis Clark and McMurtrey providing the other two; the CU lineup stranded six runners on base in game one.
The night cap was a true pitchers' duel between Swafford and OC's Kali Crandall that the score was decided in the opening frame.
Oklahoma Christian got a 3-run homer from Kylie Janzen in the top of the first and then Edwards hit a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the frame.
Both starters put up scoreless innings the rest of the game with Swafford allowing just two base runners in the final six innings and Crandall stranded 10 Aggies on the base paths during the 7-inning contest.
Three of those came in the bottom of the seventh as
Alyssa Deanda reached on a error and then after two outs
Kylie French was hit by a pitch and Webb walked to load the bases for Swafford. After a battle at the plate, Swafford flied out to center to end the game.
In her seventh loss of the season, Swafford gave up the two runs but allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out four OC hitters.
Cameron recorded just three hits off Crandall and walked four times. Edwards, French, and Webb had the hits, while
Haley Castle was hit twice and
Madyson Marvulli drew a pair of walks.
The Aggies close out the regular season with a 25-23 overall record and a 13-17 conference mark, locking up the 9-seed in the LSC Tournament. They will face the 8-seed West Texas A&M in the opening round of the tournament in Tyler, Texas on Thursday, May 5, at 1:30 p.m. for a chance to play the 1-seed UT Tyler later that day.
