LAWTON – The sixth ranked Aggies suffered their first Lone Star Conference loss on a breezy Saturday, falling 5-2 to No. 35 Angelo State, snapping their 12-match winning streak.
Getting off to one of their best starts in program history, Cameron entered Saturday having won a dozen straight including a 7-0 sweep of Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday. Their perfect record against Division II opponents did not scare off the Rambelles as they came into Lawton to spoil the Aggies quest for a perfect league record.
It was a close match from the start with doubles play. The 30th ranked duo of
Anastasia Uspenskaia and
Magda Wawrowska won 6-4 at one but
Lea Manga and
Kateryna Rudenko lost 7-5 at three, leaving the point up to the battle at two.
Vasilisa Polunova and
Karolina Glowinska played to a 6-all tie, but ASU's pair came away with a 7-5 win in the tie breaker to win 7-6 and give their team a 1-0 lead in the match.
Angelo State started singles by taking a 3-0 lead with two set wins at six and three, but Uspenskaia got CU on the board with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 win at two. Wawrowska followed that with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 win at five to get the Aggies to within one point of the Belles. Unfortunately, Rudenko lost 6-3, 6-3 at four, giving ASU the win and then the ranked battle of No. 31 Polunova and No. 14 Daniela Rodriguez at one was decided 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 in favor of Rodriguez.
The loss to ASU is Cameron's first to a Division II opponent as the other two losses on the season came against a Division I foe and a JUCO opponent. They are now 14-3 overall and 4-1 in league play.
Cameron has another big LSC battle on Tuesday, April 12, as they visit rival Midwestern State, who is also ranked in the top-50 by the ITA. That match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start in Wichita Falls, Texas.
