PITTSBURG, Kan. – Arianna Navarrete and Paris Patterson lead the Aggies as they closed the Gorilla Classic with Mary (N.D.) and the host Pittsburg State. Cameron won the opener against the Marauders 3-1 and fell in the nightcap against the Gorillas 3-0.
The trio of Anjolie Navarrete, Arianna Navarrete, and Paris Patterson recorded a double-double. Anjolie Navarrete dished out 45 assists and collected 14 digs, Arianna Navarrete recorded 18 kills and 36 digs, and Patterson collected 17 kills and 33 digs.
Caitlyn Henderson had seven kills, Natalia Araujo collected six kills, Jessica Lipkit and Anjolie Navarrete had three, and Trinity Maldonado added one.
Cameron had four aces recorded, one from four different Aggies: Araujo, Meagan Jimenez, Arianna Navarrete, and Patterson.
Anjolie Navarrete had a game-high 45 assists, Araujo, Jimenez, and Patterson added two, and Lipkit had one.
Arianna Navarrete collected a team-high 36 digs, while Patterson added 33, Araujo recorded 29, Jimenez had 24 digs, Anjolie Navarrete grabbed 14, Lipkit added four, and Henderson had two.
Henderson and Lipkit led the Aggies defensive front with five blocks, Araujo swatted four, Anjolie Navarrete collected three blocks, and Arianna Navarrete and Patterson had two.
The Aggies opened the game early 3-1 lead before building an 11-7 lead. Mary tied the game at 11-11 and got ahead 14-11 with a 7-0 run. The closest Cameron would get the rest of the set is 17-19 before falling 25-19.
The Black-and-Gold built a 4-1 lead to open set two, but the Marauders responded to knot the game at 4-4. CU tallied five straight points to go ahead 9-4. The two teams traded points, with Mary tying the set at 20-20, but the Aggies held off the charge to win set two 26-24.
Cameron won the third set with a well-balanced attack; five different Aggies recorded a kill in the set. The Black-and-Gold build an early 9-3 lead. Mary closed the gap due to five straight errors by Cameron, bringing the score to 10-8. The Aggies held at least a two-point lead the rest of the way before closing the set with a 25-22 win.
In the fourth set, the teams traded points going back and forth, tying five times early, before Mary built an 11-6 lead with a run of 6-0. Cameron climbed back to tie the game at 14-14, but UM responded by going on another 6-0 run to take a 20-14 lead. The Aggies rebounded to tie the set at 22-22 and again at 24-24 before winning the set 26-24.
In the Gorilla Classic finale, Patterson would lead the Black-and-Gold with her fourth double-double of the tournament, recording 13 kills and 10 digs.
In the opening set, Pittsburg State got ahead early with a 4-1 lead and never looked back, pulling away and winning the first set 25-13.
The second set started like the first, with PSU jumping in front with a 4-1 lead, building a six-point lead at 20-14. The Black-and-Gold climbed back to tie the set at 24-24 but could not take the set falling, 26-24.
Pitt State got ahead 4-1 to start the third set, but the Aggies responded by charging back to get the game within one at 7-8. The teams would trade points until Cameron went on a 5-1 run to bring the score to 16-17. The Gorillas would build a 19-22 lead, but the Aggies' 5-0 run gave them a set point at 24-22. PSU would respond, winning five of six points to win the set 27-25.
Arianna Navarrete collected 10 kills, Henderson recorded four, Lipkit and Anjolie Navarrete had one.
Anjolie Navarrete had three aces, Jimenez collected two, and Araujo recorded one.
Anjolie Navarrete dished out 24 assists, while Araujo, Henderson, Jimenez, and Patterson added one.
Jimenez led the Black-and-Gold with 20 digs, Patterson collected 10, Araujo had seven, Arianna Navarrete snagged six, Anjolie Navarrete collected five, Henderson had two, and Lipkit added one.
Lipkit led the Aggies with five blocks, Henderson, Anjolie Navarrete, and Patterson collected three blocks, and Araujo and Arianna Navarrete had one.
Cameron will travel to Denton, Texas, to face off with Western New Mexico in the LSC Preseason Festival on Thursday, Sept. 8, at 1 pm.
