Short-handed Aggies Fall to Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Cameron men's basketball falls to Angelo State on Saturday without two starters 73-56 inside the Stephens Arena.

Jaylan Thomas matched his career-high with 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor, 3-for-7 from three, and 3-of-5 at the charity stripe. Caylen Goff-Brown scored 19 points on 6-of-14 shooting, 3-for-8 beyond the three-point line and 4-of-4 at the free-throw line.

Andre Washington scored six points, Kortland Johnsen recorded three, and Reggie Prudhomme and Colt Savage added two points.

Thomas pulled in nine rebounds, Washing snagged six boards, Prudhomme grabbed five, Kenyon Holcombe added three, and Taylor Cox and Goff-Brown had one.

Prudhomme dished out five assists, while Goff-Brown, Johnsen, Savage, and Washington had one.

Thomas would score the first eight points of the game for Cameron, with them trailing 10-8 four minutes into play. Goff-Brown would then score the next six points giving the Black-and-Gold a two-point lead at 14-12. Over the next 10-plus minutes, ASU would go on a 16-2 run to build a 28-16 lead with 3:30 to play until the half. CU closed the half on a 9-5 run, heading into the break trailing 32-25.

Thomas would have a game-high 15 points at the intermission, with Goff- Brown adding six points. Kevon Godwin would lead the Rams with nine points, and Fredelin De La Cruz had eight.

The Aggies came out with a fire lit under them, opening with an 8-0 run to take a 33-32 lead. Five minutes into the second half, Angelo State would retake the lead and build an eight-point advantage at 48-40. Cameron would have a 4:40 scoreless stretch shooting 0-6, allowing ASU to build an 11-point lead with a 6-1 scoring run. The Rams would pull away, building a 23-point lead with a 19-4 run down the stretch. The Aggies did not give up, closing the game with a 6-2 run, falling 73-56.

CU finished the game shooting 38.2 percent, making 21-of-55 shots from the floor, 6-of-24 threes for 25 percent, and 8-of-11 free throws. ASU made 27-of-59 shots for 45.8 percent, hitting 13-of-33 three-pointers for 39.4 percent and shooting 6-for-8 at the charity stripe.

Angelo State won the rebound battle 40-27, while Cameron forced 15 turnovers to the 14 they had. The Aggies won the battle in the paint 30-24.

The Black-and-Gold will return to the confines of the Aggies Gym for a four-game homestand kicking off against Oklahoma Christian on Thursday, Jan. 19, at 7:30 pm.
