LUBBOCK, Texas – Cameron University drops the final game of the opening weekend to Lubbock Christian 20-12 at Hays Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies drop to 1-3, losers of three straight, after opening the season with an 8-7 win over the Chaps.
Holden Tate had a career day at the plate driving in six runs while going 3-for-4 with two home runs; two runs scored, and a hit-by-pitch.
Lance Barnett had a 2-for-5 outing with two runs, and one RBI, Kody Bigford went 2-for-5 with a run scored, and a stolen base, Hunter Smith was 2-for-5 with two runs, an RBI, and a home run, and Beau Williams went 2-for-3 with three runs and was hit by two pitches.
Jayce Clem was 1-for-5 with a double and drove in one, Drew Durst went 1-for-3 with two walks, a run, and RBI, and Trent Mallonee was 1-for-2.
Durst got the start on the bump, pitching two innings, surrendering four runs, three earned, on three hits and struck out two. Weston Max was saddled with the loss after two innings, allowing five earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Carter Bourg threw 0.1 innings, giving up four hits and three earned runs. Brendan Moran pitched 3.1 innings, surrendering six runs on six hits while striking out five. Evan Nichols faced two batters allowing two hits and two runs before Grayden Stauffer pitched the final 0.1 innings allowing a hit.
Cameron would get on the scoreboard first off after a Smith solo home run in the top of the first.
LCU would score four runs over the next two innings before the Aggies would retake the lead after Durst walked with the bases loaded to score Bigford, and Tate connected for a grand slam down the line in left, which scored Williams, Barnett, and Durst to give them a 6-4 lead.
The Chaps scored five runs in the fourth to take a 9-6 lead, which they would never surrender.
Tate would hit his second homer of the day in the fifth to trim the score to 9-7.
Lubbock extended their lead to 12-7 in the bottom of the inning.
In the sixth, Cameron would score three runs, Smith scored on a Barnett infield single, Williams crossed the plate on a wild pitch, and Tate drove in Barnett with a single.
LCU responded with two runs in their half of the inning.
Cameron would get their last two runs in the eighth when Clem doubled to center to drive in Williams, and he would come around to score on a wild pitch.
The chaps pulled away with six runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure the 20-12 win.
The Aggies will return home to open the season at McCord Field on Friday, as they host Angelo State for a single game with the first pitch scheduled for 3:00 pm.
