CU Drops Twin Bill Saturday

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron baseball team was swept in their doubleheader on Saturday at McCord Field by the St. Mary's, Despite Weston Max's gem in the nightcap.

The Aggies earned their eighth series-opening win on Friday night against the Rattlers to open up senior weekend. The nine senior baseball players, Jacob Acheson, Ryan Allen, Jayce Clem, Marcos Feria, Drew Henderson, Max, Evan Nichols, Holden Tate, and Beua Williams, were honored between games on Saturday.

In game one, CU turned to Senior hurler Feria, who lasted just one out, giving up three runs in that span. The Aggie Bullpen threw zeros thanks to Colton Popp's two outs to close out the first and an inning from Carter Bourg. Garrett Klein ended the scoreless streak while seeing six runs come across, though just three were earned. Nolan Archuleta kept the game within striking distance for the Black-and-Gold with a stellar outing across two and two-thirds, only allowing one hit, hitting one batter, but punching out a Rattler in his scoreless relief duty.

CU's bats produced six runs, started by a Lance Barnett solo shot off the right field scoreboard to jump-start the offense in the fifth. Barnett reached on a throwing error in the next frame to plate Drew Durst, and Tate doubled down the line to score Barnett. Trent Mallonee and Williams strung together singles which produced three runs, two being driven in by Williams.

Ultimately, the Aggies fell in game two of the series, 9-6.

In game three of the set, head coach Kyle Williams gave the ball to Max, who tossed a gem in his final outing as an Aggie. Max lasted five and a third innings of the seven-inning affair, only allowing four hits, two walks, and punching out four. Only two runs were charged to Max, who passed the baton to Clayton McClenan to close out the game.

McClenan finished the final inning and two-thirds by allowing four runs, though Max's two runs came across on his watch, five hits and one strikeout. That lifted the Rattlers bats to a 6-3 win in game three.

The Aggie offense saw their first run come across on a Tate single to center to score Durst before Durst singled in the next frame to score Williams extending the Aggies' cushion to 2-0 at that time.

Barnett then struck out but reached on a drop-third strike which was enough chaos to score Tate and regain the lead for CU. That was short-lived, as a Rattler rally in the seventh ended things.

Up next, the Aggies play their series and season finale on Sunday at 1:00 pm against StMU.
