LAWTON, Okla. - The Cameron University volleyball team stayed hot, picking up a victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday afternoon in a five-set battle.
The Aggies (6-15, 2-6 LSC) pick up their first win over TAMUK in ten years and finish the weekend with consecutive victories over TAMIU and TAMUK for the first time.
Set one was a signal of things to come, as the teams needed extra points to determine the winner of the first frame with neither squad holding a lead larger than four points. The Aggies held a 23-19 lead before the Javelinas responded with a 4-0 run to tie the set at 23-23. Both teams traded points before CU strung two together and took the set, 28-26.
The battle continued in set two as the teams tied at 10-10 before a 9-1 run for TAMUK proved the difference in the set, 20-25.
The Aggies quickly responded. After the Javelinas jumped to a 13-6 lead in the first set, the Aggies rattled off a 14-2 run and did not look back, taking set three, 25-19.
The Javelinas controlled set four with multiple 4-0 and 4-1 runs to force a fifth set, 15-25.
Set five was commanded by CU, never trailing in the deciding frame. After the teams traded sides with the Aggies leading 8-6, CU finished the match off on a 7-2 run, downing the Javelinas.
Jennifer Valdez powered the Aggies with a career performance on the afternoon. The senior set a new career-high in blocks, totaling 10 across the five sets to go alongside a team-leading 14 kills with a .306 attacking percentage. Valdez was also just 0.5 short of matching her career-high in total points, recording 20.0.
Rachael White and
Kayla Quintana both recorded double-digit assists, with 24 and 20, respectively. Defensively,
Anastasija Andelic led in digs once again with a total of 23.
UP NEXT
The Aggies head back on the road as they take on Western New Mexico and Sul Ross State. First up, Cameron will take on WNMU on Oct. 23 at 7 PM before facing off against Sul Ross on Oct. 25 at 12 PM.
