Cameron University Names Nathan Kennedy Head Men’s Basketball Coach

LAWTON, Oklahoma – Cameron University Director of Athletics Lou Izzi has announced Nathan Kennedy as the Aggies new head men's basketball coach.

Kennedy has 20 years of experience at the NCAA Division II level as a player and a coach, including the last five years at Arkansas Tech University where he served as associate head coach.  Kennedy helped lead Arkansas Tech to the 2024 Great American Conference regular season and tournament championships and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

"I am delighted to welcome Nathan Kennedy as the new head coach of the Cameron men's basketball program," said Izzi.  "Nathan has an outstanding pedigree as he has played for and worked with a few of the most successful Division II coaches.  He brings a tremendous energy and vision to our program and I am confident he is well-prepared to build and sustain a highly competitive and successful men's basketball program at Cameron."

Prior to his time at Arkansas Tech, Kennedy served as assistant coach at Northeastern State University, the University of Montevallo, the University of West Alabama, and the University of Charleston.  Over that span, he was a part of programs that reached the NCAA Division II tournament four times.

Kennedy played three seasons for legendary coach Jim Crutchfield at West Liberty University where he was introduced to a style of play centered around tempo, toughness, and unselfish basketball. Crutchfield has gone on to win over 700 games in his career and has won two of the last three NCAA Division II national championships at Nova Southeastern.  Kennedy also played two seasons at Salem International where he was the starting point guard and team captain.

"I want to express my sincere gratitude to Director of Athletics Lou Izzi for trusting me with the responsibility of leading the Aggie men's basketball program," said Kennedy.

"Cameron University is a special place and my wife, Nikki, and I are excited to make Lawton our home and raise our family here.  I also want to thank President Askins for taking the time to meet during our visit, and I look forward to connecting with President Designate Dr. Shane Hunt this summer.

Throughout my journey toward becoming a head coach, I've been fortunate to have incredible mentors whose guidance has been invaluable. I wouldn't be here without their support. Now, it's time to roll up our sleeves and start building a team that will compete for Lone Star Conference championships. The LSC is one of the top D2 conferences in the nation, and we are eager to earn the support of the Lawton community while proudly representing Cameron University."

Kennedy graduated from Salem International University with a bachelor's degree in Physical Education.  He earned a  master's degree in Physical Education from the University of West Alabama.
