Volleyball Splits Day One of Drury Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Miss. - The Cameron University volleyball team opened the weekend at the Drury Invitational on Friday, splitting their two games with a 3-2 win over East Central and a 0-3 loss to Drury.

The Aggies (2-5, 0-0 LSC) will close out their weekend with a pair of games against Lane College and Northwest Missouri State.

GAME ONE - CU 3, ECU 2

The first game of the day brought a sense of deja vu for the Aggies, taking on East Central for the second time in four days and once again needing to go the distance to determine a winner.

East Central struck first, taking the first two sets of the match. In set one, the Tigers jumped to a 9-3 lead before the Aggies cut the deficit to 12-3. East Central responded with a 7-0 run, but the Aggies came right back with a 6-1 run of their own before ECU pulled away to take the first set, 18-25.

In set two, both teams traded points and the lead, never holding an advantage of more than four points until the Tigers secured the set, 20-25.

The Aggies fought back, holding a steady advantage through most of set three, 25-21, and fighting back from a deficit early in set four in another 25-21 decision to tie the match at 2-2.

Riding the momentum, CU dominated the deciding fifth set, storming out to an 8-1 lead and never looking back as they took the set, 15-4, and the match, 3-2.

Cameron and East Central will meet one more time this season, with the Aggies traveling to Ada, OK on Oct. 14.

GAME TWO - CU 0, DRU 3

The Aggies battled hard against the Panthers of Drury, but fell to their hosts in an 0-3 decision to close the day.

Facing large deficits in both the first and second sets, the Aggies mounted fierce comebacks to cut the Panther leads to less than three points, but Drury pulled away in both sets.

The Panthers were largely in control in set three, keeping the Aggies at a distance for a 12-25 win in the set and 0-3 win.

Anastasija Andelic led the Aggie offense in both contests, totaling 19 kills on the day with 13 against ECU and 6 against Drury. Rachael White racked up a tally of 30 assists across both games while Kayla Quintana finished just behind with 29 total assists.

Defensively, Andelic also led with 23 digs total while Shelby Rusch led the defensive effort in game two, grabbing 12 against Drury.
