SPRINGFIELD, MO - With another split day at the Drury Invitational, the Cameron University volleyball team finishes the weekend with a 2-2 record, recording wins over East Central and Lane College and losses to Drury and Northwest Missouri.
The Aggies (3-6, 0-0 LSC) have already beaten their win total from the 2024 season in 20 less games.
GAME ONE - CU 3, LC 0
Cameron held firm control through most of their first match of the day against the Lane College Dragons. In set one, both teams traded the lead through the midpoint of the set up to 15-15 before the Aggies kicked into gear. A 10-2 run powered the squad to a dominant set win.
The second set played out similarly, with the two squads battling to a 16-14 scoreline before the Aggies pulled away. This time, a 9-4 run saw the Aggies comfortably take the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
In set three, the Aggies stormed out to a commanding 13-2 lead to open the final frame. The Dragons mounted a stout comeback, cutting the deficit all the way to 20-18 in the late stages of the set. However, the Aggies regained their footing and put the Dragons away with a final 5-2 run for the win, never trailing in the set.
Three Aggies tallied a team-leading seven kills in the victory, being
Maria Osorio,
Jennifer Valdez, and
Anastasija Andelic. Similarly,
Rachael White and
Kayla Quintana tied with a team-leading 13 assists. On the defensive end, Andelic and White both totaled eight digs while
Presleigh Roest led in blocks with two.
GAME TWO - CU 1, NWMSU 3
The Aggies battled hard but came up short in their rematch against the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats. A closely contested first set went the way of the Bearcats, with neither team holding more than a four-point lead until the closing points, 19-25.
A hot start in set two saw the Aggies and Bearcats tied, 13-13, at the halfway mark. Battling back from a small deficit, the Aggies inched ahead to a 22-19 lead before NW Missouri tied the set once more, but CU tallied a 3-1 closing run for the set win.
Set three saw both teams trade runs in the early stages until the Bearcats grabbed a firm advantage which they held until the end, 17-25. The fourth set gave a similar story, with early runs from both teams leading to a Bearcat lead at the midway mark that they would not relinquish, 19-25.
Kayla Eggiman led the way for the Aggies offensively with 14 kills. White repeated as the team's assist leader with 20 while Quintana grabbed 12 assists of her own. Eggiman also led the team in digs at 10 while Valdez and
Haley Beggs both record four blocks in the contest.
UP NEXT
The Aggies stay on the road for a midweek matchup against Southern Nazarene on Sept. 16 at 6 PM in Bethany, OK. Afterwards, the team travels to Austin, TX for their part of the LSC Challenge, taking on UT Dallas and St. Edward's on Sept. 19 and 20.
