LAWTON, Okla. – After a strong performance at the Mustang Derby, the Cameron University cross country teams are set to return to action this Friday morning, Sept. 26, at the Lawton Soccer Club Fields for their second home meet of the season.
The women's 5K will kick off the event at 8:00 a.m., followed by the men's 8K at 8:25 a.m.
Two weeks ago at the Mustang Derby, the Aggie men impressed with a runner-up finish, coming just five points shy of first place behind UT-Dallas. Leading the pack were Alex Teffu and Victor Ramos, who placed fourth and fifth overall with times of 18:45.7 and 18:51.5, respectively.
On the women's side, the Aggies earned a third-place finish out of eight competing teams. Akaya Lightbourne paced the squad with an impressive third-place individual finish in 14:43.3. She was followed closely by teammates Marie Sommer and Kaat De Staercke, who finished seventh and eighth with times of 14:57.4 and 14:58.1.
Head Coach Zach Johnson said, "We are training very hard right now, so our focus is more on execution rather than on our race times. We want to work together and have a good pack and hopefully pick up a team win on both sides. Our top three have been pretty consistent on both sides with Miquel Cruz, Alex Teffu, and Victor Ramos leading the men and Marie Sommer, Akaya Lightbourne, and Kaat De Starcke leading the Women."
