ODESSA, Texas – With a match-high 16 kills from freshman Megan Olivarez, the Cameron volleyball team defeated UT-Permian Basin (25-12, 19-25, 25-23, 25-20) in four games Saturday afternoon. The 16 kills by Olivarez were the second most by the Corpus Christi, Texas, native this season.
In the first set, Cameron (7-9) was led by Olivarez, who had four kills, while junior Adrienne Lawson added three. The defensive effort was also outstanding for Cameron, as it had five blocks -- with junior Amanda Filiaga tacking on two solos and two assisted blocks.
The Aggies struggled in the second set, as they had a zero attack percentage. Cameron had nine attack errors and nine kills in the set with Lawson, Filiaga and Olivarez combining for seven kills.
Cameron’s all around effort in the third set proved to be the difference. The Aggies had 13 kills, two assisted blocks, 19 digs and a service ace. Olivarez paced Cameron’s offense will five kills, while junior Sarah Corbett added three more.
Olivarez again helped control the Aggie offense with five kills, while Filiaga’s two assisted blocks strong armed the defensive effort. In the final set, Lawson secured her third straight double-double with two kills and six digs, as she finished the match with 11 kills and 17 digs.
Tuesday will be the next action for Cameron, as it plays host to Oklahoma City University at 7 p.m. The contest against the Stars will be the final nonconference game of the year for Cameron.
