STEPHENVILLE, Texas – After dropping the first game in four sets Saturday to St. Mary’s, the Cameron volleyball team was able to get the split after taking UT-Permian Basin (18-25,25-22,17-25,25-14, 15-9) to five games at the Tarleton State Invitational.
The Aggies stormed out of the gate in game one and had 15-11 lead, but a 6-2 run by St. Mary’s erased Cameron’s advantage. However, a match ending 9-4 run by Cameron gave the Aggies a victory. Junior
Adrienne Lawson and freshman Jenna Keeler each had three kills and the defense smacked down eight blocks.
Cameron and St. Mary’s contest continued to be close in the second set with the scored tied at 20 and the Aggies looking to take control the Rattlers seized the match. St. Mary’s ended the set and tied the match by going on a 6-0 run.
In the third match, Lawson led Cameron’s offense with six kills and senior
Valerie Ogle and freshman Jenna Risoli combined for nine assists. However, the team hit just .097 and had five errors on serves.
Junior
Nikita Abbott and freshman Megan Olivarez offensively tired to push the match to five combining for seven kills. However, after tying the match at 18, St. Mary’s went on a 7-1 run close out the game.
In the nightcap, Cameron used three in double digit kills to get the victory, as Lawson had a team-best 14, while Abbott and Olivarez each come away with 12 and 11 respectively. Also helping the offense was Risoli and Ogle as they combined for 52 assists.
Cameron played better defensively, as they were only committed 10 errors. The Aggies also had 10 blocks on the afternoon with freshman Jenna Keeler tacking on a game-high six. Junior Amanda Filiaga also hammered down five assisted blocks.
The Aggies will be back in action Tuesday when they host Southern Arkansas in home opening at 6 p.m.
