Lawton, Okla. (Oct. 22, 2011) — Cameron’s volleyball looked impressive against Eastern New Mexico Tuesday night, shutting out the Zias, 25-13, 25-15 and 25-17. The team was able to avoid mistakes and showcase an aggressive offense, hiitting .392 as a team.
“Every starting hitter we had hit over .300,” said Head Coach Doug Tabbert. “In a single match, that’s really hard. Offensively, we were very efficient. We also only had five errors.”
Tabbert said that in addition to the offense, the Aggies (14-10, 8-8) also played solid in all phases of the serving game, adding pressure to their opponent.
“I think a lot of it was ball control, and our serve receive was solid,” he said. “That makes a huge difference. The serve receive part is just harder to defend when you have options. When you limit errors as well as we did … you force them to play defense. And we served well. We had them out of system and were solid there.”
Freshman Kelle Carver led the Black and Gold with 12 kills in 17 attempts. The well-rounded attack also saw efficient nights from senior Malyssa Acton, six for 14; senior Adrienne Lawson, nine for 24; senior Sarah Corbett, three for six; senior Filly Ezenwa, three for seven; and senior Nikita Abbott, two for three.
The Aggies effectiveness was also displayed at the net, as Acton, Corbett and Ezenwa each recorded four blocks. Lone Star Conference Setter of the Week, sophomore Jenna Risoli, led the team with five, while also assisting on 27 kill.
“We played very well at the net,” Tabbert said. “Twelve blocks for us is good. We really made them work for their kills.”
The win gives Cameron three in a row as the season heads toward the home stretch. The team will travel to take on Tarleton State (14-13, 8-7) with a chance to move up for its current fifth place standing in conference play. The top eight teams will advance to the postseason.
