Aggies Drop Heartbreaker To Mustangs

Wichita Falls, Texas (Oct. 4, 2011) -- Cameron dropped a tough five set match against Midwestern State and in the process snapped a conference leading five game winning streak.

The Aggies (10-6, 4-4) started off slow against the Mustangs (11-6, 3-5), dropping the first two games 25-21, 27-25. The deficit proved too step for Cameron to climb. Cameron played tough in the third and fourth games, forcing a number of errors on MSU.  The Black and Gold pulled the victory in both the third and the fourth, 25-18, 25-17, respectively.

“We showed a lot of character to come back in (games) three and four,” said Head Coach Doug Tabbert. “We had game two in our hands and let it slip away, but offensively we got more productive and our defense picked it up in (games) three and four.”

The home team Mustangs pulled out early in the fifth game, posting a 6-1 lead. Cameron would fight back, coming within two at 13-11, but MSU held on and pulled out a 15-11 win. The loss drops the Aggies for .500 in conference play and snaps a five game win streak, all of which have come on the road.

“I’m glad that we continue to show some courage and some grit down the stretch, unfortunately we keep putting ourselves in situations where we have to do that,” the coach said.

Seniors Malyssa Acton and Adrienne Lawson led Cameron offensively with 18 kills apiece. Junior Julisa Ocasio played tough defense, en route to a 30-dig effort.

“We got some offense from Malyssa that was a boost for us,” Tabbert said. “Overall, offensively we struggled, but she certainly performed better than she has in awhile.”

Cameron (10-6, 4-4) will return home for its next contest against conference leading Angelo State (18-2, 7-1) at 7 p.m. in the Aggie Gym.
